Mary J. Blige: Black Folk Can Be Stupid TOO!!

By Jueseppi B.

Black folk need to go sit the fuck down, and shut the fuck up. Especially this “Black” folk in particular:

One, Madame Noire, also hit out at Blige for doing the ad:

“You know what desperate execs do when they need to make money? They hurriedly throw together clichéd, often stereotypical, advertising campaigns. And that’s where you came in, Mary. Having a black woman sing about chicken was no mistake. They’re trying to reach the ‘urban’ (aka black) demographic. And God knows black folk, won’t buy anything unless there’s a song, and preferably a dance, attached to it.

“You are the Queen of Hip Hop Soul, not a court jester for the so-called King of Burgers.”

This “Madame Noire” don’t speak for me, or Black America. Does it make a difference to “Madame Noire”, when Nike uses LeBron dunking a basketball? Is “Madame Noire” insulted when that fat Black woman is acting like Aunt Jemima is selling Popeye’s Fried Chicken?

More about this fake manufactured fiasco of an issue……

(CBS/AP) Mary J. Blige’s Burger King commercial, which featured the Grammy-winning R&B star singing about chicken, has been pulled off the air.

The fast-food chain is blaming music licensing issues, not criticism of the ad, for the decision to pull it.

he ad, which features Blige singing soulfully about chicken wraps, premiered this week.

But as the video went viral, some in the black community criticized the ad as stereotypical. The black women-oriented website Madame Noire likened it to “buffoonery.”

Burger King said Tuesday the commercial was pulled because of a licensing concern. The company said it hopes to have the Blige “ads back on the air soon,” though a spokeswoman would not comment on whether they ads would be the same.

The spokeswoman also noted that other celebrities, including Salma Hayek and Jay Leno, also are advertising the snack wraps.

A rep for Blige did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

More from a web site called “Straight From The “A”….

Superstar diva Mary J. Blige has always kept it real for her fans. From singing about heartbreak to “No Mo Drama,” the queen of hip-hop soul has always remained constant but her recent decision to do a controversial Burger King “Crispy Chicken Wrap” commercial has got everyone giving her the side-eye!

Blige participated in Burger King’s celebrity campaign and her ad spot appeared online alongside David Beckham, Selma Hayek and Jay Leno. MJB’s video suddenly disappeared from the net after it received a ton of backlash, yet Beckham, Leno and Hayek’s commercials all still remain online.

I’ve posted the video below for those of you who can’t figure out what all the controversy is about. It’s just chicken… right?

Mary J. poppin up on that table after those Caucasian men asked “What’s in the Chicken Wrap?” was a classic moment that will forever go down in history.

I could NOT STOP LAUGHING when I first saw the commercial and I swear I thought it was spoof… a Saturday Night Live skit… a prank… ANYTHING but “real life!”

Clearly the joke was on us… and Mary…. *sigh*

Mary J. Blige is an musical icon and I don’t know WHO authorized this buffoonery but clearly someone in her camp needs to get the boot! You cannot lead me to believe that Mary thought that commercial was a good idea.

Did anyone even preview that commercial before it was hilariously released to the masses??

After Mary’s commercial mysteriously disappeared from just about everywhere online, GAWKER contacted Burger King to find out why it was pulled and they responded with the following:

The Mary J. Blige advertisement has been pulled due to a licensing issue. BURGER KING® expects to have the Blige ads back on air soon.

I honestly don’t think the video will ever be played in the mainstream, but it did garner BK quite a bit of press. Maybe their next press release will say simply “April Fools!”

The only fools here are the fools who think they decide what is offensive to Black folks. I am Black, and Mary J’s commercial for Burger King was NOT offensive to me. If some Black woman pretending to my my “mammy” talking in an exaggerated southern dialect while attempting to sell me biscuits and fried chicken for Popeye’s is not offensive, how in the fuck is Mary J Blige singing on top of a table in a Burger King offensive to me?

Get real “Black” folk….there are many more offensive things going on in our community to be upset over. Like the senseless slaughter of Trayvon Martin.

About these ads

  1. They pulled the videos off YouTube. I didn’t see the commercial but there are lots of questionable commercials out there. these are entertainers doing what they are getting paid to do entertain. I love Mary J. and she has been through a lot and has grown into a classy lady. if she had no problem with it why should anyone else.

    • Because Black fools have nothing better to do than hate on what someone else is doing. I suggest that those who are hating on Mary J, do two things….1). Walk in Mary J’s shoes. 2). Focus on staying alive while racist members of the white stupidity kill off Blacks at an amazing clip while they are busy protesting a fuckin BK commercial.

  2. JB, you gave me a good laugh this morning…seriously! :) I’m not for the offensive or stereotypical portrayal of Black folk, but really? I suppose it’s far easier to sink your teeth into a chicken commercial than it is into an issue that needs much more work.

P.S. I love the wall of photos for Trayvon.

    • Yes Somer…I was kinda in amazement over this uproar over a damn Burger King ad. Now if we could just all demand an arrest of George Zimmerman like “we” demanded a chicken strip wrap be pulled from the air waves…

I was sent that wall of Trayvon photos by someone from FB, it was so cool. As always, I love hearing from you.
      ;-)

  3. A point well worth making.

  4. Unfortunately I was unable to get the video to play but geezzz I can’t imagine if Mary J chose to shot the commercial then how could we have that much hoopla over it… We have so many other things that is out of ones control like the slaughter of our youth…What black person has that kind of mind to cry outrage over a commercial choice when all the other true madness going on that are life changing and life threatening for our people as a race not to mention the rage they should be pouring into the wrongs our Wicked Right GOP has tried to wage against us and our President and 1st Family…What are you thinking People, get your head on straight and pick and chose your battles better than this please time is not going to stop for us to get it right!!

    • Shelley, That was not a video I have in this post but just a photo. It is my understanding the actual video has been pulled from the airwaves.
It might be impossible to see it now. I saw it once before it was pulled, and the only thing I found wrong with the ad was that it was impossible to understand what Mary J was singing. Poor sound quality. Otherwise I found it no more offensive than a Black basketball player dunking a ball for a Nike ad, or a Black actor doing a spot for make-up specifically geared toward Black women. People of all races are sometimes very stupid.

  5. What? Black folk trying to act like they don’t like chicken now? I mean dang, it’s an edible and BK has a product to sell. Wish I could sing about some chicken and get my hustle on.

    • Twin, exactly….and if it’s not ok for May J to sing about chicken, then it must not be ok for Queen Latifah to sell Black women make up specifically geared for Black skin……right?

      • I guess we like focusing on the dumb stuff. And like you said, there are more important issues we need to turn our attention to AND be proactive about making changes toward. Besides, these same black folk will spend money for a stage side seat to hear comedians joke about stereotypes. And too, we’re not the only folk who like chicken. The only ones I know who don’t eat chicken are vegetarians.

And where you been? Why it take so long to respond? :-)

      • Hey Twin, I am or was traveling to Chicago….now that I am here in The Windy, I will eat, till I pass out, see the Cubbies play ball, and attend the War On Women rally/march on April 28th. What are you up to?

      • Writing a bit and making adjustments.

      • What is an adjustment?

  6. I don’t see what the big deal was and you’re correct; we’ve got enough on our collective plates to worry about in the Black community besides MJB singing about chicken.
