CHICAGO (CBS) — A special guest is expected to lead this year’s Bud Billiken Day Parade.
As WBBM Newsradio’s Mike Krauser reports, President Barack Obama will be the grand marshal in the parade this summer. The annual event is a back-to-school celebration on the city’s South Side.
Reports also indicate Obama will attend the VIP breakfast the morning of the parade.
This will be 83rd Bud Billiken Day Parade, and the first time President Obama has marched since he took office in 2009.
The Bud Billiken Parade is known as the second largest in the nation. It draws crowds of about 500,000 people each year to King Drive between Bronzeville and Washington Park.
The Bud Billiken Parade and Picnic dates back to 1929, as a means for Defender founder Robert Sengstacke Abbott to honor the youth who delivered the newspaper.
This year’s Bud Billiken Parade is set for Aug. 11.
