Protesting Romney: Dying from a lack of insurance

Health care has become a huge issue in the debate, with Mitt Romney promising to repeal the Affordable Care Act if elected. Romney has said nobody dies because they lack health insurance — but Leslie Boyd doesn’t agree.

Her son, Mike Danforth, died of colon cancer at the age of 33 because he lacked health insurance. Boyd was protesting outside the Romney rally in Asheville, N.C., to share his story.

When she was pregnant, Boyd told Current, she had a rare virus. Her doctor told her that she should have an abortion, but she did not and her son was born with a birth defect — his bladder was outside his body. Though the condition was corrected in infancy, the surgery to correct the problem increased his risk of colon cancer.

Because he was born with a birth defect, Mike was unable to get insurance coverage.

“A birth defect,” Boyd told us, “is a pre-existing condition.”

Mike’s birth defect put him at risk for colon cancer. But without insurance, he was unable to get colonoscopies that could have detected the cancer early.

“He went to the emergency room four times,” Boyd said. “But they don’t have to treat you, they only have to stabilize you. That’s the law.”

When Mike was finally diagnosed, it took five days for doctors to stabilize him before he could have surgery. Boyd says her son left his wife in order to become eligible for Medicaid. He tried to get disability, but it took 36 months. The first check came nine days after his death.

Boyd was protesting Romney, objecting to Romney’s reversal of his stance on health care.

“It’s working in Massachusetts,” she said. “But now people want to say it’s not working there or that the federal plan wasn’t patterned after Massachusetts.”

“Had he been able to get colonoscopies, the cancer would have been detected early and been treated,” Boyd said. “He would have gone back to school, he would have been paying taxes. Instead, he cost the taxpayers over a million dollars in health care. And then he died.”

A vote for Lyin UnFitt Mitt and Lyin Paul Ryan is a vote for the death of millions of Americans.

Ask yourself this question voters: Why on earth would anyone, but especially a Presidential candidate  deny health care coverage to millions of Americans yet claim to be for ALL of America’s well being?

  1. Obama has a tall task next debate, because it’s clear the burden is always on the Dems to perform flawlessly. In addition to breaking down Mitt’s lies, I hope Obama promotes the success of his policies with a presidential energy and passion by telling personal stories like the one you highlight here.
