East Coast Braces For Hurricane Sandy, Winter Storm Watch: A Perfect Storm.
The pre-Halloween hybrid weather monster that federal forecasters call “Frankenstorm” is looking more ominous by the hour for the East Coast, and utilities and local governments are getting ready.
Hurricane Sandy, having blown through Haiti and Cuba and leaving at least 40 dead, continues to barrel north as the lowest category hurricane, just as a wintry storm is moving across the U.S. from the west, and frigid air streams south from Canada.
And if they meet Tuesday morning around New York or New Jersey, as forecasters predict, they could create a big, wet mess that settles over the nation’s most heavily populated corridor and reaches as far west as Ohio.
Meteorologists expect a natural horror show of high wind, heavy rain, extreme tides and maybe snow to the west beginning early Sunday, peaking with the arrival of Hurricane Sandy on Tuesday and lingering past Halloween on Wednesday.
“It’s looking like a very serious storm that could be historic,” said Jeff Masters, meteorology director of the forecasting service Weather Underground.
With a rare mix of three big merging weather systems over a densely populated region, experts predict at least $1 billion in damage.
As Hurricane Sandy moves to the north, forecasters have lifted a tropical storm warning for the east coast of Florida from Deerfield Beach northward to Jupiter Inlet.
The National Hurricane Center said Friday evening that a tropical storm warning remains in effect from Jupiter Inlet northward to St. Augustine. A tropical storm watch has been issued for the east coast of Florida from north of St. Augustine to Fernandina Beach, near the Georgia line.
As of 8 p.m. Friday, Sandy was 400 miles south-southeast of Charleston, S.C., with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. It was moving to the north at 7 mph. Tropical storm conditions were expected along the east coast of Florida on Friday night, with some areas getting 1 to 2 inches of rain. The so-called megastorm is expected to pick up speed as it turns toward the north-northeast on Saturday and then follow a northeastern path on Sunday.
CBS News hurricane consultant David Bernard reports that Sandy, which has weakened to a Category 1 storm since Thursday, will likely run parallel to the East Coast through Sunday night into Monday morning, when it will be just east of North Carolina‘s Outer Banks.
On Monday, Sandy is forecast to shift westward and hit anywhere from as far south as Chesapeake Bay up to New York’s Long Island or southern New England, Bernard reports.
In Dania Beach, Fla., CBS News correspondent Manuel Bojorquez reports the Sunshine State has been feeling Sandy’s effects already for 24 hours, and the storm still has the potential to bring high winds and heavy rains.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Friday that wherever the storm comes ashore, there will be 10 inches of rain and extreme storm surges. Up to 2 feet of snow should fall on West Virginia, with lighter snow in parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania.
“What we are doing is we are taking the kind of precautions you should expect us to do, and I don’t think anyone should panic,” New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Thursday.
Some have compared the tempest to the so-called Perfect Storm that struck off the coast of New England in 1991, but that one hit a less populated area.
“The Perfect Storm only did $200 million of damage and I’m thinking a billion” this time, Masters said. “Yeah, it will be worse.”
Romney Cites Incorrect Auto Manufacturing Claim In Ohio
By
JAKE MILLER / CBS NEWS
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney campaigns at the football stadium at Defiance High School in Defiance, Ohio, Thursday, Oct. 25, And tells his usual bunch of lies and misinformation to further his campaign based and built on fear and distortion.
Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s statement to an Ohio rally late Thursday that Chrysler is considering moving production of all Jeep vehicles to China was disavowed by Chrysler and blasted by the Obama team, but Romney’s campaign has not indicated whether they knew the claim was inaccurate or whether Romney will continue repeating the debunked claim on the stump.
On Thursday, Romney told a rally in Defiance, Ohio, site of a General Motors plant, “I saw a story today that one of the great manufacturers in this state Jeep — now owned by the Italians — is thinking of moving all production to China. I will fight for every good job in America. I’m going to fight to make sure trade is fair, and if it’s fair America will win.”
The Republican was seemingly riffing on a series of right wing blog reports circulating Thursday that incorrectly interpreted a Bloomberg story from earlier in the week. Bloomberg reported that Chrysler was considering moving production of Jeeps sold in the Chinese market to China, but emphasized that Jeeps sold in the American market would continue to be manufactured in America.
The bottom line is this:
Lyin UnFitt Mitt Romney Tells Another Lie: Chrysler Jeep Is NOT Sending Manufacturing Jobs To China. He Said They Were, They ARE NOT.
Romney did this:
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney told a crowd in Defiance, Ohio, on Thursday that Chrysler was considering moving “all production” of its iconic Jeep lineup to China.
No, Mr. Romney: Jeep Is Not Moving All Its Factories to China.
CHRYSLER JEEP Response To Lyin UnFitt Mitt:
Chrysler reacted to Romney’s remarks with indignation. The company released a statement late on Thursday that made it clear that “Jeep has no intention of shifting production of its Jeep models out of North America to China.” (Those are Chrysler’s italics.) Chrysler’s PR folks also appeared to chide Romney with this remark at the end of their press release: “A careful and unbiased reading of the Bloomberg take would have saved unnecessary fantasies and extravagant comments.”

Colin Powell Endorses President Obama
Published on Oct 25, 2012
CBS This Morning – October 25th, 2012
This is a GREAT AMERICAN. He’s voting not based on who the leader of his team is – like all the other mindless sheep. He’s voting based on who he thinks will be BETTER FOR THE COUNTRY.
Yes, well Obama has also created more jobs in four years than in the eight previous years under Bush. And I’m not miserable at all, thank you. I’m doing quite well! And all your yakking means nothing to me. Reminds me of Mr. Used Car salesman Romney. Slick, flashy, quick on the mouth, but with nothing substantial behind it. I’ll consider him a real threat when he starts leading in Ohio. Till then, it’s just hot air.
Romney Surrogate Says Colin Powell Endorsed Obama Because He’s Black
Published on Oct 26, 2012
A day after former Secretary of State Colin Powell said he supported Barack Obama based on health care and foreign policy, a top Mitt Romney surrogate floated a different theory. Campaign co-chair and former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu said Powell likely endorsed the president because they are both black.
Appearing on CNN, Sununu said he applauded the retired general, but then added: “Frankly, when you take a look at Colin Powell, you have to wonder if that’s an endorsement based on issues, or whether he’s got a slightly different reason for preferring President Obama.” In case that was unclear, he then specified that he was referring to the men’s race.
Hours later, Sununu backpedaled furiously, saying that he is a friend of Powell’s and that he didn’t in fact doubt his motives behind the endorsement.
Of course, this isn’t the first time Sununu has made headlines for racially charged comments. In July, he called Obama “foreign,” saying that the president doesn’t understand the “American system” because “he spent his early years in Hawaii smoking something.”
