Caramel Apple Pie Dumplings is an apple treat I came up with for Halloween that is “scary” good.   This recipe is an infusion of three comfort fruit favorites (apple dumplings, apple pie, and caramel apples).

I started by hollowing out a large Cameo apple (like a Halloween Jack-o-lantern).  Then I mixed up a “Northern Spy”  apple pie filling of cinnamon, sugar, and nutmeg with a little cornstarch, and stuffed it in the cavities of the apples. I topped the filling with  pats of real butter, and a little brown sugar. Then I baked the apples for twenty minutes at 350 degrees and allowed them to cool completely.

Since it takes a while for baked apples to cool, I am going to try to bore you with a family tree history lesson.

I picked the “Northern Spy” apples used for stuffing my apple dumplings, from more than half a century…

Well, we have a cease-fire. It has been violated but it is still a cease-fire. I pray for all of the people who have been injured or killed. I pray for those who have lost family and friends. The problem is this cease-fire is not peace. It could erupt any time and the horror would start all over again.

Now the Egyptian Prime Minister has declared he has absolute power for the next six months. What is going on? It seems as if we are as a species going quite out of our minds. The Egyptian people are protesting and I understand that. It is their God given right to speak up against this madness. My heart is with them and hopes that the protests will let the…

Wal-Mart protests draw hundreds nationwide

Protestors want better pay, affordable health care

Published On: Nov 23 2012
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -Hundreds of people — including some employees — have taken part in Black Friday demonstrations at Wal-Mart stores nationwide, protesting what they say is the retailer’s retaliation against speaking out for better pay, fair schedules and affordable health care.

According to organizers from the union-backed group OUR Walmart, workers and supporters rallied in Landover Hills, Md., Miami, Oakland, Calif., Chicago, Danville, Ky., Dallas and Kenosha, Wis. The organizers say the protests will continue throughout the day.

One of the bigger protests occurred in Landover Hills, near Washington. Organizers said about 350 people participated, although video of the event showed around 100 participants. Dawn Le, who works for the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, which backs OUR Walmart, would not say how many of those taking part were Wal-Mart employees.

Wal-Mart, in a statement, said there were 26 protests Thursday night, when its stores opened at 8 p.m. to begin Black Friday. It estimated that fewer than 50 Wal-Mart workers participated, and that many of the protests involved no employees at all.

Climate Reports Forecast Dire Future, Even If Action Is Taken

By  Huff Post Green

In the absence of aggressive government policies aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions, a number of leading organizations, including the United Nations, the World Bank and others, have begun issuing analyses that regard potentially dangerous temperature elevations as not just a possibility should the status quo prevail, but a near certainty even if things start to change.

The latest report, released Wednesday by the United Nations Environment Program, suggested that greenhouse gas emissions levels are currently around 14 percent above where they need to be by the end of the decade in order to avoid what many analysts believe could be a risky level of planetary warming.

That report comes on the heels of a study issued Tuesday by the Geneva-based World Meteorological Organization, which stated that human civilization has pumped roughly 375 billion tonnes, or metric tons, of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere since the dawn of the industrial age, when the extraction and combustion of fossil fuels began in earnest.

Republicans’ “Plan B” for Tax Hikes Is the Same as Plan A: Lie Through Their Teeth

Republicans in the Senate are brainstorming ways to shield small businesses from tax hikes should they be unable to persuade President Barack Obama to extend the Bush tax rate cuts for everyone.

A sort of GOP Plan B, a carve-out could give Republicans — and some red state Democrats — a way to save face if they’re faced with a choice between allowing the government to go over the fiscal cliff or swallow some sort of marginal tax rate increases.Maine Republican Susan Collins and other GOP senators are toying with what they’re calling a “carve-out” to benefit small businesses that pay their taxes through the individual side of the Tax Code.

Collins, for her part, is reprising her proposal to impose a 2 percent surtax on the wealthiest earners, with a carve-out. But the concept could also apply to a broader marginal rate increase. The idea is to exempt those profits, from S-corporations, partnerships and other passthrough entities, from the income tax increases Obama wants for top earners…

“The problem with raising tax rates on wealthy Americans is that more than half of them are small-business owners,” Boehner said in a press conference last week.

Let’s get a reality-check from those well known socialists at Bloomberg :

The argument that raising tax rates on upper-income individuals would harm entrepreneurs is likewise flawed. We love small business as much as anyone. But with the U.S. facing unsustainable budget  deficits that will require many Americans to pay higher taxes, it’s worth separating fact from fiction.

First, small businesses destroy almost as many jobs as they create. Second, only about  3 percent  of small-business owners fall into the upper-income  tax brackets  that would increase if, as Obama has proposed, the Bush tax cuts are allowed to expire. And third, many businesses counted as small aren’t engaged in traditional small-business activity. Instead, they are  partners in hedge funds , law firms and private-equity shops, or they are highly paid actors, athletes, speakers and authors.

Romney may have lost, but the voting system is still broken

by  Gerry Bello and Bob Fitrakis

Two weeks have passed since the night of the Rove meltdown and Romney’s electoral loss. Like the days after a major sports championship, everybody has an opinion on two things: why victory was achieved this time and how victory can be achieved the next time. However, political reality is quite different than sports. Democracy is more than a game. And if our current democracy is a game, the people lost in 2012.

America is at best a minimal democracy. It functionally has two parties, one more than a dictatorship. It allegedly grants one person one vote each election, although this is not constitutionally guaranteed. Our elections fail to meet even minimal standards by allowing the racist suppression of votes that we thought was outlawed in 1965. What this election has made clear is that more than a small minority seek to erase 140 years of struggle from Andrew Jackson to Lyndon Johnson to secure and defend these most basic tenets of democracy: the right to vote.

Last but not least:

How Roger Ailes Built the Fox News Fear Factory

The onetime Nixon operative has created the most profitable propaganda machine in history. Inside America’s Unfair and Imbalanced Network.

At the Fox News holiday party the year the network overtook archrival CNN in the cable ratings, tipsy employees were herded down to the basement of a Midtown bar in New York. As they gathered around a television mounted high on the wall, an image flashed to life, glowing bright in the darkened tavern: the MSNBC logo. A chorus of boos erupted among the Fox faithful. The CNN logo followed, and the catcalls multiplied. Then a third slide appeared, with a telling twist. In place of the logo for Fox News was a beneficent visage: the face of the network’s founder. The man known to his fiercest loyalists simply as “the Chairman” – Roger Ailes.

“It was as though we were looking at Mao,” recalls Charlie Reina, a former Fox News producer. The Foxistas went wild. They let the dogs out. Woof! Woof! Woof! Even those who disliked the way Ailes runs his network joined in the display of fealty, given the culture of intimidation at Fox News. “It’s like the Soviet Union or China: People are always looking over their shoulders,” says a former executive with the network’s parent, News Corp. “There are people who turn people in.”

The key to decoding Fox News isn’t Bill O’Reilly or Sean Hannity. It isn’t even News Corp. chief Rupert Murdoch. To understand what drives Fox News, and what its true purpose is, you must first understand Chairman Ailes. “He is Fox News,” says Jane Hall, a decade-long Fox commentator who defected over Ailes’ embrace of the fear-mongering Glenn Beck. “It’s his vision. It’s a reflection of him.”
