Porshe Foster, just 15 years old, who has a sophomore in high school, an aspiring architect and an athlete, was in the backyard of a home in the 7000 block of South Campbell Avenue with several people when an unknown male approached and opened fire on the group, striking the her in the back about 9:15 p.m., police said.
A 15-year-old girl was gunned down Monday evening while standing with friends in a back yard on Chicago’s Southwest Side.
Porshe Foster was standing with a group of other teenagers behind a home in the 6900 block of South Campbell Avenue in the city’s Lithuanian Plaza neighborhood when a man approached the group and opened fire, striking Foster in the back, just before 9:30 p.m., ABC Chicago reports.
Foster was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center but died within the hour, according to Fox Chicago.
Police told the Chicago Tribune the shooting was apparently gang-related, but that Foster was likely not its intended target.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Foster was a sophomore at ACE Tech Charter High School and was interested in architecture.
Porshe was the youngest of her mother Bonita Foster’s six daughters, according to the Tribune.
“This thing has to be stopped,” Bonita Foster told the paper. “It’s foolishness.”
No one is in custody in the shooting as of Tuesday morning.
The shooting comes one day after two people were shot, one fatally and the other critically, outside the funeral for an alleged gang member on the city’s South Side. Sherman Miller, 21, was killed in the incident. The previous holiday weekend, four men were fatally shot, one fatally stabbed and at least 20 people wounded in shootings in Chicago.
Chicago police say they do not believe Porshe Foster was the intended target.
According to police, the girl was staying with a friend Monday night in the Marquette Park neighborhood. At approximately 9 p.m., they walked over to a house near 70th and Campbell. As they were talking to several friends, Chicago police say a man walked up and opened fire on the group in a backyard.
Keith Terrell lives near the crime scene and can point to the bullet holes left in his door. He described how Foster collapsed inside his stairwell after being shot.
“I felt her pulse. She had a pulse, and she was still breathing. So, I hurried up and called the ambulance. I said, ‘This girl is losing her life right here. You should hurry up and come,'” said Terrell.
Foster was taken to an area hospital with a bullet wound to her back, but she died less than an hour later.
Bonita Foster, the girl’s mother, talked to ABC7 Chicago about the future her daughter would never get to see.
“She was only 15. She didn’t even get to live her life. She didn’t get to graduate high school or go to prom. We had a little fund where we were saving money for her to go to prom. She didn’t get to do any of that,” the mother said.
ABC7 is told a group of mothers who have lost children to gun violence organized a rally near the scene of the shooting Tuesday at 6 p.m. Chicago police say the shooting appears to be gang-related.
Her sisters showed the small unwrapped guitar they planned on giving her for Christmas. They said they were heartbroken she would never get to play it.
“You never think it would happen to you — nobody close to you like this. I would never think something like this would happen to ‘Shay.’ She never did nothing to nobody,” said sister Robyn Foster.
As the family asked for prayers, community activist Andrew Holmes passed out fliers hoping people would come forward with information.
“What we want them to do is quit fingerpointing at the Chicago Police Department and the city because these are somebody’s kids killing somebody else’s kids,” Holmes said.
Chicago police said early Tuesday a red car was seen driving away from the area before the shooting, but authorities have not said if that car is related to the shooting.
The bottom line here is really very simple. Handguns & assault weapons need to be removed from the hands of American citizens. It is just that simple. Until handguns and assault weapons are removed and made illegal, gun violence will continue. Children will continue to die. Adults will continue to die. Humans will continue to die.
All for the cause of weak scared egotistical Americans who lean on an antiquated amendment giving them the right to own instant death.
