Eva Longoria, who was a big fundraiser and prominent surrogate for Obama’s campaign, will serve as a committee co-chair, all four living former presidents will serve as honorary co-chairs, and several top campaign officials will organize the weekend’s festivities.

Campaign manager Jim Messina is in charge of the inaugural parade down Pennsylvania Avenue on Jan. 21, which coincides with the King federal holiday.

As is the tradition when the constitutionally mandated swearing-in falls on a Sunday, the chief justice will administer the oath of office privately on Jan. 20, then perform it in front of the crowds on the Capitol steps the next day.

The District launched a Web site Thursday where residents and visitors can get information and updates on road closures, existing hotel rooms and transit, although the road closures usually are not announced until the last week of December. The site, inauguration.dc.gov, is the inauguration committee’s official go-to place for ticket information.

The president and first lady and Vice President Biden and his wife will participate in service projects in the metropolitan area. In 2009, the president visited with troops at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and then with teens at a D.C. shelter.

Said President Obama: “This year’s inaugural will reflect our belief that working together, we can keep moving our country forward.”

First events for Obama’s second inaugural announced

The Presidential Inaugural Committee, tasked with planning festivities surrounding the second swearing-in of President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, announced Thursday the preliminary details of what will be a long weekend of events to mark the start of the administration’s second term, beginning with a National Day of Service on Jan. 19.

The Obamas and Bidens, as well as members of the Cabinet, will participate in community service projects in the capital region to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

Because Jan. 20, the constitutionally mandated date for the swearing-in of a president, falls on a Sunday, the public inaugural on the West Front of the Capitol will take place on Monday, Jan. 21. But Obama and Biden will take the oath of office to officially begin their second terms in what the committee says will be a small, private ceremony on the 20^th.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee announced that all four living former presidents will serve as its honorary co-chairmen. ActressEva Longoria is among the four other co-chairs, who will be primarily responsible for raising funds for the events.

Inauguration 2013: District Of Columbia Government Launches Website For Swearing-In Ceremony

WASHINGTON — The new District of Columbia’s 2013 Presidential Inauguration website promises all kinds of useful information for the 500,000 to 800,000 people expected in the nation’s capital for President Obama’s second inauguration set for Jan. 21 — that’s less than half the number who attended the 2009 inauguration.

On the site: Tips for getting around, a map of the National Mall and alist of prohibited items (among them: real and simulated firearms, thermoses, pets and booze).

There’s a link to a useful map of D.C. traffic cameras and links to the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies’ website, which is the place to go for information about getting tickets and for information.

Some sections of the D.C. government website are empty as of Thursday afternoon, like the page concerning city closures and the page about volunteering.
