Yep. When the players were steel and the bleachers were wood.
I didn’t start watching till Jim Brown left the game, and Sayers’ knee was wrecked. My older Brothers swore Jim Brown was the best athlete ever to step on the field, regardless of position. Injuries took out some potential greats too, like Billy Sims.
My favorite will always be Earl Campbell. When he came out of college, I had a buddy in the service from Corpus Christi Texas, and all he could talk about was this Earl Campbell, the Tyler Rose. I was like… how good can this guy be? Then I saw Earl destroy the Patriots in one game, and drag Jack Lambert around in another in 1978… and I was keen to catch every Oilers game I could after that. I didn’t care about the Oilers. I just wanted to see what Earl would do next. That cat was just insanely fun to watch. .

I miss old school NFL football, when the ground game was featured and the great running backs were the stars. The QB’s main function was to hand it off and get out of the way. I know most folks love the passing game, but seeing Walter Payton or Earl Campbell bust a seam in the A-Gap and rumble through the secondary like a runaway truck…. that was fun. Even today I regard the RBs as the best and most courageous athletes on the field.
Adrian Peterson is old school, man.
Yes, in my time, watching Jim Brown, Gale Sayers, Walter Payton, Earl Campbell, Hershel Walker. even Bo Jackson, Tony Dorsett, Eric Dickerson, I know I missed a few, but you get my drift.
