THIS Is Why Black America Is Doomed….“House Negro” (also “house Nigger”).

I have one simple question for Mr. Tavis Smiley & Dr. Cornell West….where were BOTH OF YOU during the past 19 months of the Trayvon Benjamin Martin injustice?

I didn’t hear one single out cry from either of you so called advocate for the Black community…..unless you were criticizing The Black President, or Rev. Al Sharpton, both of whom have been out front protesting and supporting The Fulton/Martin family.

“House Negro” (also “house Nigger”)

House Negro” (also “house Nigger“) is a pejorative term for a black person, used to compare someone to a house slave of a slave owner from the historic period of legal slavery in the US. The term comes from a speech “Message to the Grass Roots” (1963) by African American activist Malcolm X, wherein he explains that during slavery, there were two kinds of slaves: “house Negroes”, who worked in the master’s house, and “field Negroes” (also “field Niggers“), who performed the manual labor outside.

He characterizes the house Negro as having a better life than the field Negro, and thus unwilling to leave the plantation and potentially more likely to support existing power structures that favor whites over blacks. Malcolm X identified with the field Negro. The term is used against individuals, in critiques of attitudes within the African American community, and as a borrowed term for critiquing parallel situations.

Cornel West, Tavis Smiley criticism of President Obama devolves into pot shots

Give Professor Cornel West this much: in the pantheon of presidential insults, “global George Zimmerman” really is quite a gem.

And if it wasn’t for that blunt reaction to President Barack Obama after his 18-minute valediction to Trayvon Martin, West’s talk-radio partner, Tavis Smiley, might have taken the prize when he declared the speech as “weak as pre-sweetened Kool-Aid,” via tweet.

Never mind that if Obama had gone another route, and stood pat with his initial, and very generic, 66-word response to the George Zimmerman verdict, Smiley and West would have almost certainly declared Obama’s remarks to be “bland as unsweetened iced tea.”

Because no matter how the president reacted to this—or any situation—the pattern with Smiley and West is that it’s never good enough.

Criticism is fair, slander is not

Which doesn’t mean that the president shouldn’t be criticized. Like a few years ago, for instance, when I said Obama was “stupid” for involving himself in the fracas that followed Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr.’s arrest by a Cambridge cop. Or earlier this year, when I wrote that it was “plainly a failure” for Obama to have intervened militarily in Libya without coming up with a contingency plan for what unfolded later on in Benghazi.

Obama asked for this job, and when he missteps, I’m sure he can handle the criticism—no matter who that criticism comes from.

So, if Smiley and West have an issue, for instance, with the president’s admittedly ruthless prosecution of the war on terror, then they shouldn’t hesitate to air it. But when West noisily calls Obama a “global George Zimmerman,” it doesn’t shed any light on the issues—and just makes the once-universally admired scholar sound more like a crank.

Perhaps, though, the most revealing thing about Smiley and West’s intemperate brickbats—hurled from the left—is that they call for an ideological purity that they know is inconsistent with presidential decision-making.

And that’s a lot like what’s thrown at Obama by their ideological analogues on the right.

Sacrificing realism to score points

The nexus between “global George Zimmerman,” “pre-sweetened Kool-Aid” and the reaction of Fox News’ Sean Hannity—that what Obama meant by “could have been me” was that both he and Trayvon “smoked pot” and “did a little blow” as teenage boys—is the instinct to hammer Obama, rather than to realistically evaluate him as a president.

Never mind that the president used Mitt Romney’s health plan, extended George W. Bush’s tax cuts, doubled down in Afghanistan and helped bring the Dow back from the 6000s to the 15000s. Critics like Hannity will still oppose anything Obama proposes.

Just as Smiley and West—both progressives—seem not to have noticed that Obama got out of Iraq, signed federal sentencing reform, tripled the number of women on the Supreme Court, repealed Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and offered a balanced, analytical, level-headed—but hopeful—personal reflection in the wake of the Trayvon Martin tragedy.

Which Smiley immediately pronounced “weak as pre-sweetened Kool-Aid”—even though Obama’s words received praise across the spectrum, from Trayvon’s parents to the president’s former rival, Sen. John McCain.

One-liners and pot-shots

Just like when West says civil rights leaders are on the “Obama plantation,” he’s sharing his script with former Congressman Allen West—the firebrand black Republican who once said that he’d lead black voters off of the Democrats’ “21st century plantation.” Or the time Dr. West remarked that Obama was scared of “free black men,” which sounded a lot like fast-food exec Herman Cain’s assessment that Obama isn’t a “real black man.”

I could go on, but I won’t.

The point isn’t that Smiley and West shouldn’t speak their minds—they should. But if they want us to take them seriously, then they’d be well-advised to come up with something better than one-liners and pot-shots.

Because like a lot of the criticism that comes from the other end of the spectrum, Smiley and West’s riffs are as weak as pre-sweetened…never mind. You know what I’m saying.

Thank you theGrio

As I asked at the start of this post, where were Dr. Cornell West/Tavis Smiley in supporting this murder of an unarmed Black youth that could have been either of these “Black” men….back in the day?

Nowhere to be found.

Silent. Not a word.

Put this idiot in a hoodie in front of George Zimmerman on the night of February 26th, 2012, and he would be Trayvon Benjamin Martin.

Cornel West: MSNBC a ‘rent-a-negro’ network, Sharpton on ‘Obama plantation’

by Lilly Workneh of  theGrio

Dr. Cornel West has recently been under fire for his characteristically outspoken remarks on President Barack Obama’s personal and political views.

This week he called the president a “global George Zimmerman” when asked to weigh in on his response to the George Zimmerman verdict and now West is directing his ire at MSNBC and, more specifically, one of the cable network’s hosts, Rev. Al Sharpton.

TheGrio and MSNBC are both part of NBC News which is owned by NBCUniversal.

This weekend, while appearing on Tavis Smiley’s radio show, West said Sharpton is still on “the Obama plantation,” and argued that this has inhibited the MSNBC host and political activist from being more critical of the president and Attorney General Eric Holder.

Smiley has also made controversial remarks about Obama and his response to the George Zimmerman trial.

“Deep down in his soul I think he really does feel a fire, but he can’t allow that fire to in any way spill over toward the White House. Why? Because he’s still too tied, he’s too uncritical, he’s too deferential, he’s too subservient as it were and as long as that’s in place we’re going to find ourselves unable to tell the fundamental truth,” West told Smiley.

West and Smiley spoke more on the Zimmerman acquittal in the death of Trayvon Martin and discussed the media’s handling of the racial dynamics of the case.

“What’s your sense of how the media, and not just Fox News but beyond that, your read as you’ve been watching this, how the media handled this case?” Smiley asked West.

“I think that it’s been decrepit though, brother. I mean, you get a focus on some of the upper middle class folk. I mean, what I call the ‘rent-a-negro’ phenomenon on MSNBC…'” West answered.

While West expressed his displeasure with the network, he failed to mention that he has frequently appeared as a guest on the cable news channel in the past.

Thank you theGrio

Rev. Al Sharpton is criticized by Dr. Cornell West, for bringing attention to an injustice that would never have seen the light of day had Rev Al not took action when approached to do so…..book sense don’t always mean intelligence, common sense, critical thinking, or logic…..does it Dr. West?

The House Negro and the field Negro — back during slavery. There was two kinds of slaves. There was the house Negro and the field Negro. The house Negroes – they lived in the house with master, they dressed pretty good, they ate good ’cause they ate his food — what he left. They lived in the attic or the basement, but still they lived near the master; and they loved their master more than the master loved himself. They would give their life to save the master’s house quicker than the master would. The house Negro, if the master said, “We got a good house here,” the house Negro would say, “Yeah, we got a good house here.” Whenever the master said “we,” he said “we.” That’s how you can tell a house Negro.

Allen West calls Obama’s Zimmerman verdict response ‘horrific’

Former Congressman Allen West has joined the small, but vocal minority of pundits who have lashed out at President Barack Obama over his impromptu remarks on race and the George Zimmerman trial.

Obama made headlines (and some have argued history) when he told the press corps last Friday that “Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago.”

Martin, a 17-year-old unarmed black teen, was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, who argued he pulled the trigger in self defense and was acquitted of all charges relating to Martin’s death.

West, who has made so secret of his hatred for the president, said that Obama’s statement was “horrific.”

“I believe it comes back to being a respectful young man and maybe that’s something that was missing out of President Obama and Trayvon Martin’s life,” West said. “But to try to play this and try to make it a personal experience, this was just absolutely horrific.”

Previously, West, who represented a district in Florida, had been more critical of the Sanford police department’s handling of the Martin case, but he has also been staunchly opposed addressing the subject of race when it comes to what took place that fateful night in February.

“From my reading, it seems this young man was pursued and there was no probable cause to engage him, certainly not pursue and shoot him…against the direction of the 911 responder. Let’s all be appalled at this instance not because of race, but because a young American man has lost his life, seemingly, for no reason, ” said West in March last year.

Tavis Smiley, Cornel West and Sean Hannity have also either ridiculed or dismissed the president’s statements on the acquittal of Zimmerman.

Thank you again theGrio

Racism in America has infected people of all skin tones and hues. It’s a disease that can only be cured by death in most cases. Every now and then, like with Cancer, there is a miraculous cure and a previous racist becomes a cured loving common sense human being. Like Cancer that doesn’t happen often. The racist usually goes to their grave being a racist and hating anything not exactly like them.

Here we have 3 Black men who have been deathly silent on Trayvon Benjamin Martin…..that is until The President, Barack Hussein Obama, and Rev. Al Sharpton, a real advocate for the Black community and not a fake ass wanna be leader of the Black community, like Allen West, Tavis Smiley and Cornell West….stood up and jumped head first into this American injustice.

Here’s the reason these house niggers decided to speak up NOW.

Jealousy envy and hatred. The by products of racism.

ALL 3 are jealous of the President of the United States. Cornell is very jealous of Rev Al.

Neither of these 3 house Negro’s sprung into action to help Tracy Martin or Sybrina Fulton when their son was stalked, hunted and murdered by George Zimmerman. They were not concerned or interested UNTIL others were involved.

Now we are expected to pay attention to their very loud voices of criticism.

Dr. Cornell West, Mr. Tavis Smiley & Mr. Allen West……you are the exact house niggers Minister Malcolm spoke of.

Sit The Fuck Down & Shut The Fuck Up.

Please.

  3. I always said two losers.Other than stealing money from Black Folk, what have they done for our people lately?Cornell West needs to update his wolf man appearance and Tavis Smiley needs a new suit. They are jealous of the President because he is more intelligent than the two of them.

  5. JB you echo my sentiments about Amos and Andy…uh…I mean Smiley and West! Good post. Thanks.

    • They make my panties get all twisted with that “Stepin Fetch-it Negros” mindset. I need a vacation.

“Criticism is fair, slander is not!” seems Judas finds his way into just and noble causes no matter the century.

  7. I noticed West on Bill Maher’s 2 weeks ago. He was nasty.

    • He’s mad. He can’t be the first Black President.

      • I wasn’t aware of his backround, so listening to him on Bill Maher i was like, What ! ! What are you talking about ! * sigh* with friends like this, who needs enemies. I don’t mind criticisms, but theirs are just wrong.

      • How old are you may I ask, if you don’t mind answering?

      • JB I thought it was something about Obama never inviting him to the White House. In any case, I used to be a huge Dr. West’s. However, divisiveness and jealousy among each other has no place in the public forum especially amongst us Black folk…(Using my mom’s dialect as I type this.) :-)

      • West issue was Barack not giving him extra tickets to the 09 inauguration, accommodate his extensive friends list. Obama never got his request because a social secretary handled that request and she turned West down.

Smiley’s issue is Barack didn’t attend a party he threw, sending Michelle in his place, and Smiley didn’t like that “snub.” To any sane person Michelle is as good, if not better, than Barack attending.

        Both stupid Negro’s.

      • LOL. Yep. My thoughts exactly. He’s lost my respect…

      • HEY stranger….how have you been? Missed you….;-)

      • HEY….you should hop over to my blog sometime. Keep up. ;) Promise, it won’t hurt.

Anyway been doing okay, had a close friend I considered like a little brother die recently (early this month), so it’s been rough. Shocker.

But comin’ up for air somewhat now.

By the way, what do you think of Zimmerman suddenly becoming Mr. save the day?

And Tavis Smiley has gone way down in my book as well. Kinda surprised at him, I think his fame has gone to his head too. SMH.

      • I thought I signed up as a subscriber to your blog, thats how I “keep up” by subscribing to blogs I like. I assumed I had done that over at your blog so I would be notified by e-mail when you posted……

      • They are. Both idiots. And it’s really disappointing, because at one point I was along with both of them, listening.

Then West just took a left turn somewhere and has never made it back. He’s a public figure and he’s that petty? How ungrateful and privileged. A big spoiled baby who is now drinking his own Koolaid (publically).

        Seriously, that’s Smiley’s issue. Seriously?

I had already stopped reading any statements West had to make, guess I’m gonna turn the channel on Smiley from here on in.

        Stupid….

Anyway, me too on the subscriptions. And I’ve been told this a few times. So WP has a function to perfect but they’ve probably laid off half the department who monitors this stuff. :-[

      • Yes both have some 3rd grade snubbing issues going on with The POTUS.

WP is a mess right now.

      • It’s ridiculous. Yes (concerning WP). Why I am not looking forward to going through their endless pages to find a widget. It should be so simple….

        Ugh.

      • On your WP desktop on the right hand side is a menu which contains the widgets….drop down to widgets, click on widgets and you’ll find a subscription widget right there.

        Very easy

      • There is nothing in my menu that says widgets. Another way to get to this???

      • I assume you found it……

      • I don’t see the option to subscribe to your blog, that is something you should consider adding from your widgets cause it allows people to get notified by e-mail of every post you ass to your blog site. I assumed I was signed up for that with you.

      • LOL. Oh my bad. It was on my old format automatically. Oh boy, um, now to find that widget. Ugh. Alright….gonna do that.

      • Yes please….find that widget cause your viewers will shoot up a lot.

      • I will. Thanks Jueseppi! xo

      • ;-)

      • Looking for it…………

      • I DID IT. OKAY…GO ENTER EMAIL. :)

      • Done
