He worked hard, deferred gratification, and lived a disciplined life — and in return, he was rewarded with fair wages and decent benefits, the chance to buy a home, save for retirement, and most of all, to hand down a better life for my mother and me.
For decades, the basic bargain that if you work hard you can get ahead began to erode. And then right before I took office in 2009, the bubble burst and the security of millions of middle-class families was under siege.
We’ve made progress over the last four years, but if you listen to what the other side has to say about their vision for the country, you don’t get the sense that they want to help middle-class families get ahead.
This is why we fight — and it’s why I need you to be involved.
I’ve always said that no party has a monopoly on wisdom, and I still believe that. But the policies Republicans are proposing right now aren’t going to help grow our country from the middle out — they’re only going to put the progress we’ve made at risk.
We’ve got some important debates coming up — and I need to know I can count on you to be in the Democrats’ corner.
