Yesterday, New York City police announced the largest seizure of illegal guns in the city’s history, including a fully automatic machine gun, a sawed-off shotgun and high-capacity assault weapons — 254 guns in total.
All of these guns were trafficked from out of state. And we know that more than 200 of them were originally bought in states with weaker laws that make it easy for criminals to buy and sell illegal guns.
When illegal guns can move easily across state lines, gun crime is a national problem — and we need a national solution.
The tougher a state’s gun laws, the larger share of crime guns are trafficked in from other states. By 2011, more than 90% of crime guns recovered in New York City had originally been purchased in other states.
All it takes is one gun in the wrong hands to change the lives of a family forever.
Across the country, mayors in Mayors Against Illegal Guns are setting an example by combatting gun violence in their communities. But we are calling on Congress to put tougher gun violence prevention laws on the books — because no matter how much we do in our home states, we need a national solution to gun crime.
