Ayvani Hope Perez abducted in Ga. home invasion found safe

By The Associated Press  September 18, 2013

JONESBORO, Ga. (AP) – In an apparent random home invasion, robbers broke in, demanded money and jewelry and when they were told there was none, abducted a 14-year-old girl and killed the family dog, authorities in the Atlanta area said.

Perez was found safe on Wednesday, a day after her abduction.

Two men, described as wearing black clothing and armed with handguns, pried open a back door of the home in the Ellenwood area around 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, demanding the items, Clayton County police Officer Phong Nguyen said. The home invasion was apparently random, Nguyen said told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“It didn’t appear that they knew each other,” he said of the suspects and victims. “They just moved in about a month ago.”

Ayvani’s mother had her daughter and her 15-year-old son hiding inside the home, but the intruders were able to find them, police said in a statement. The men abducted Ayvani with no explanation, police said.

The crime happened on a cul-de-sac in Ellenwood, a small community about 10 miles southeast of Atlanta, police said. The neighborhood is on the northern edge of Clayton County, just south of the DeKalb County line.

Tuesday evening, more than 150 people gathered in a circle and held hands in prayer at the candlelight vigil at Dutchtown High School in Hampton, the Atlanta newspaper reported. Many teens there – holding posters with Ayvani’s name and pictures of them with her – were her classmates at the school.

Abducted Georgia Teen Ayvani Hope Perez Found Alive

A Georgia teen who was allegedly abducted by two frustrated gunmen during a home invasion Tuesday morning was found safe today, Clayton County Police said. Two suspects are in custody.

Ayvani Hope Perez, 14, was found at a location in Conyers, Ga., said Clayton County Police Chief Gregory Porter in a press conference this afternoon. “This is a good day for the family,” Porter said.

He credited “hardcore law enforcement, boots to the ground,” for helping authorities locate the teen, who he said was found in good health but is undergoing an evaluation.

The teen has since been reunited with her family, Porter said, and two suspects have been taken into custody. Authorities said other potential suspects are being sought.

Investigators fanned out across Georgia over the past two days with police checkpoints and helicopters searching for Perez.

The teen was in her pajamas when police say two men broke in the back door of her Ellenwood, Ga., home Tuesday at 2:15 a.m. looking for jewelry and money. When Perez’s mother said the family didn’t have any, the suspects shot the family dog and fled the home with Perez, according to police.

The girl’s aunt, Suky Guerrero, told ABC News affiliate WSB-TV that the family was attempting to put enough money together to pay a ransom. Police have denied the claim that a ransom has been demanded by the suspects.

“We do believe the young lady is in harm’s way. We are actively and diligently investigating this situation to make sure she is returned safely,” Clayton County Police Lt. Marc Richards said.

Police were looking for a grey Dodge which they believe the intruders were driving when they fled the scene. Police late Tuesday morning released sketches of the two suspects and the FBI joined in the search.

“Our absolute, number one priority is the safe return of a 14-year-old, innocent girl,” FBI agent in charge Mark Giuliano said.

The family had just moved to Ellenwood, a small community about 10 miles southeast of Atlanta, a month ago and police believe they had no connection to the abductors. The kidnapping has stunned neighbors, who have already set up Facebook pages hoping to bring the teen home alive.

“I hurt for the child, I hurt for the parents,” neighbor Veroniece Marable said. “That child must be frightened to be with strangers and taken from her home.”

Friends and classmates of Perez crowded her high school’s front steps Tuesday night, praying she’s unharmed and begging for her safe return.

“Just give her back. I mean, you got what you wanted obviously,” Perez’s friend Serena Campbell told ABC News. “It’s very hard to even grasp the fact that this has happened. I’m still in the stage of this isn’t real…”
