White House Tweet – October 5, 2013
Statements and Releases
In this week’s address, President Obama said that Republicans in the House of Representatives chose to shut down the government over a health care law they don’t like. He urged the Congress to pass a budget that funds our government, with no partisan strings attached. The President made clear he will work with anyone of either party on ways to grow this economy, create new jobs, and get our fiscal house in order for the long haul – but not under the shadow of these threats to our economy.

This week, the House of Representatives shut down the government, the President continued to urge them to pass a resolution to open the government back up, and the Health Insurance Marketplace opened for business under the Affordable Care Act. That’s September 27th to October 3rd, or “Just vote, and end this shutdown.”

Statement by the Press Secretary on Cancellation of the President’s Trip to Asia
Due to the government shut-down, President Obama’s travel to Indonesia and Brunei has been cancelled. The President made this decision based on the difficulty in moving forward with foreign travel in the face of a shutdown, and his determination to continue pressing his case that Republicans should immediately allow a vote to reopen the government. Secretary Kerry will lead delegations to both countries in place of the President.
The cancellation of this trip is another consequence of the House Republicans forcing a shutdown of the government. This completely avoidable shutdown is setting back our ability to create jobs through promotion of U.S. exports and advance U.S. leadership and interests in the largest emerging region in the world. The President looks forward to continuing his work with our allies and partners in the Asia-Pacific and to returning to the region at a later date.

Today in Rockville, MD, President Obama visited M. Luis Construction Company to talk about the impact of the government shutdown on the economy and why Congress needs to “just vote.” The President’s Small Business Jobs Act and other SBA programs have helped local businesses like M. Luis Construction grow in recent years, but the government shutdown has disrupted these programs.
The President’s remarks highlighted the effects of the shutdown on the American people, effects that could be avoided just by putting a resolution to fund the government and avoid a default to an up-or-down vote. Watch the entire speech here:
