Good evening –

The Affordable Care Act has been in the news a lot recently — and increasingly for the right reasons.

The law is working: Already, nearly 365,000 people across the country have picked private plans through the Marketplace — and 800,000 more are on track to get Medicaid through their states. These are people for whom health insurance might not have previously been an option — people who in the past might have been discriminated against for simple medical conditions like asthma, or who may have been dropped from their coverage just because they got sick.

Now, thousands of Americans are signing up for coverage every day. That matters. It means financial security for families all across the country. It means freedom from the fear that one illness or accident might cost you everything you’ve worked so hard to build.

If you don’t have health insurance, go to HealthCare.gov right now and sign up. You can compare plans based on your own needs and budget, and you can sign up for coverage.

And if you do it before December 23rd, you can be covered on the first day of the New Year.

Now, if you already have health insurance, I’m asking you right now to help make sure that your friends, neighbors, coworkers, and the people you go to college or church with know the facts about how they can get covered, too. Moms and dads, remind your kids this holiday season. And if you’ve recently signed up, tell your friends.

I’m asking you to spread the word about getting covered — and we’re providing some tools to help you do it.

Whether you talk to a family member, share a photo or a story on Facebook, tweet using the hashtag #GetCovered, or walk a friend or colleague through the website — your effort will make a difference right now.

That’s because the most important source of information about this law isn’t going to be me, or anyone here at the White House. It’s going to be you, telling the people you know to check out HealthCare.gov for themselves, and make their own decision about getting covered.

Tens of millions of people have already felt the benefits of reform, from free, recommended preventive care like mammograms, to more affordable prescription medications. But there are millions more of our fellow citizens who stand to be helped — and we’ve got to make sure they know exactly how.

Thanks for your help.

International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers – 17th December

Originally posted on Ruth Jacobs:

Every Sex Worker Deserves SafetyI wanted to write something for International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers but I didn’t think I could as I’ve been in too much of a dark place these last few weeks with my own suffering from the repercussions of sexual violence. I wanted to go to London to stand in solidarity with sex workers and allies to mark this day, but for the same reasons, tonight, I couldn’t do that either. Then I felt selfish wrapped up with my own pain when tonight there will be women in the sex trade who will be raped, who will be beaten and some will be murdered. So I have to say this…

Violent men think they can beat, rape and murder women in the sex trade because they do not have the protection of the police and recourse to justice. Then there are some feminists who say all sex work is…

Hemp might just be one of nature’s most perfect foods since it is full of antioxidants like Vitamins E and C, as well as chlorophyll which is wonderful for cleansing the body from toxins of all kinds, including heavy metals. The soluble and insoluble fiber in hemp can also keep the digestive tract clean and therefore, reduce the toxic burden on other internal organs. President Obama meets this morning with executives from Google, Twitter, Apple, Yahoo, Microsoft, Facebook, Netflix, Comcast, LinkedIn, Etsy and AT&T.

Readout of the President’s Meeting with CEOs

Today, the President and the Vice President met with executives from leading tech companies in the Roosevelt Room. The group discussed a number of issues of shared importance to the federal government and the tech sector, including the progress being made to improve performance and capacity issues with HeathCare.Gov.

The President also announced that Kurt DelBene, who most recently served as president of the Microsoft Office Division, will succeed Jeff Zients as Senior Advisor to Secretary Sebelius who will lead our ongoing efforts to improve HealthCare.gov and the Health Insurance Marketplace starting this Wednesday. The group discussed the challenges surround federal IT procurement. The President made clear his continued focus on improving the way we deliver technology to maximize innovation, efficiency and customer service, and encouraged the CEOs to continue to share their ideas on how to do so.

Finally, the group discussed the national security and economic impacts of unauthorized intelligence disclosures.  This was an opportunity for the President to hear from CEOs directly as we near completion of our review of signals intelligence programs, building on the feedback we’ve received from the private sector in recent weeks and months.  The President made clear his belief in an open, free, and innovative internet and listened to the group’s concerns and recommendations, and made clear that we will consider their input as well as the input of other outside stakeholders as we finalize our review of signals intelligence programs.

What is Child Abuse?

Originally posted on The Abuse Blogger:

Society is negatively impacted by child abuse, whether the abuse is physical, psychological, sexual, or neglect.  The different types of child abuse have different effects on both the victim and society.  The effects caused to a victim can potentially ruin society.  Parents who were abused as children are more likely than other parents to abuse their own children (Gerdes, 2003, p.22).

Physical child abuse is abuse resulting in injury. Physical abuse can include hitting, biting, kicking, choking, and burning. Even if the injury was not intended, the physical contact is considered to be physical abuse. Abused children are more likely to have difficulty with academic performance, self-control, self-image and social relationships (“Effects of Child Physical Abuse,” 2012).  [Physical child abuse can be the most dangerous of all the different types of abuse because it can result in death.]

Sexual abuse is any sexual act between an adult…
