Statement from Moms Demand Action Founder Shannon Watts on School Shooting in Roswell, New Mexico

by Moms Demand Action

In response to a school shooting today in Roswell, New Mexico, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense for America released the following statement from its founder Shannon Watts:

“We are shaken and saddened by the news out of Roswell, N.M., today – the 30th school shooting since the tragedy in Newtown. Schools should be safe havens for our children – yet once again, we are reminded of the failure of our leaders to act to prevent gun violence. For the families in Roswell, for our families and families everywhere, we refuse to be silent about the epidemic of gun violence in America. We demand better from our country; we demand a safer future for our children.”

According to the Center for American Progress, New Mexico’s gun death rate is 40 percent higher than the national average, making it the 10th worst state for gun deaths. In New Mexico, children ages 0–19 are killed by guns at a rate almost 60 percent higher than the national average and are murdered by guns at almost 40 percent above the national average.

To mark the first anniversary of the Newtown shooting just one month ago today, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense In America and Mayors Against Illegal Guns released an ad to call for “No More Silence” on the gun violence that affects all of our communities. The ad depicts a shooter entering a school and can be viewed here:

The sauce is a more northern style

Here is the recipe for the filling and sauce as promised. The filling is a variation of the Baltic style of cabbage roll. The sauce is a mix of more Russian styles. The final product is very tasty. Go here for how to roll the cabbage leaves and here for another type of filling entirely. By the way someone got Russian and German cookbooks for Christmas!

Baltic Style Cabbage Rolls

  • 3 lb head of green cabbage
  • 1 lb ground veal
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large onion diced fine
  • 2 tbsp dried sage
  • 2 eggs beaten
  • Salt/pepper
  • 1 14 oz can diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • 2 tbsp butter

Separate the cabbage leaves. Mix the meat, breadcrumbs, sage, eggs, and 1/2 the chopped onion until it resembles meat loaf. Season with salt and pepper. Fill the cabbage leaves with…

Lori AdorableWhy are sex worker rights important to you?

Obviously a good amount of it is self-interest. My job is hard enough without the stigma and criminalization, and I know I deserve better. But I’m not the one hit the hardest by whorephobia. I’m white, cis, from a middle-class background, work indoors, and don’t do full-service. I’m not the one usually targeted by police and rescue orgs and serial killers. Sex work, as an underground economy, attracts a lot of the most vulnerable from every marginalized group, and I am very much here for them as well.

What legislation do you think would be best to ensure sex workers have all the same rights as all other citizens?

I’m not particularly in favor of any legislation at this point. I think sex work should be fully decriminalized. If the state does need to be involved, it should regulate sex work via…

There were many dogs at this residence that were removed by animal control, but considering his disability and how full our animal stays, I knew he wouldn’t last long. What’s your writing background? When did you begin writing and what inspired you?

I began as soon as I could pick up a pen. I used to make tiny books, held together by pins, with characters I’d nicked from Enid Blyton. ‘Binkle and Flip and the Human Beans’ was the first one. I’ve always enjoyed being creative with the truth. I told the kids in my class I was a mermaid at weekends and Batman was my uncle.

When I was married I bought a typewriter and wrote lots of terrible poetry. I penned a masterpiece called ‘Poems For Kids, Not Old Goats.’ I’m amazed it was rejected! How could my genius remain undiscovered?

I started writing my first novel, SHIT HAPPENS, when I was going through a messy divorce. I was in debt, living in poverty with four little ones and the phone had been disconnected. The novel started as…
