There’s really no other process like the State of the Union — it’s always an exciting and hectic week to be at the White House.

Of course, it’s a process that involves a lot of policy experts and writers from around the building — but input and ideas from brilliant folks outside the building are just as important. That’s why our team has held a series of conversations with the American public about when they hope to hear in the President’s address next Tuesday.

Today, I took over the White House’s Instagram account to give you a sense of what that process looks like — take a look, and don’t forget to tune in next Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET.

Last Friday, the President spoke to the American people, and the international community, about how to keep us safe from terrorism in a changing world while upholding America’s commitment to liberty and privacy that our values and Constitution require. Our national security challenges are real, but that is surely not the only space where changes in technology are altering the landscape and challenging conceptions of privacy.

That’s why in his speech, the President asked me to lead a comprehensive review of the way that “big data” will affect the way we live and work; the relationship between government and citizens; and how public and private sectors can spur innovation and maximize the opportunities and free flow of this information while minimizing the risks to privacy. I will be joined in this effort by Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker, Secretary of Energy Ernie Moniz, the President’s Science Advisor John Holdren, the President’s Economic Advisor Gene Sperling and other senior government officials.

I would like to explain a little bit more about the review, its scope, and what you can expect over the next 90 days.

Yesterday the grand jury decided NOT to indict officer Randall Kerrick..Ferrell had NO weapon & Officer Kerrick claims he was assaulted by UNKNOWN means..The Attorney General’s office is re-submitting the voluntary manslaughter charges..The family of Jonathon Ferrell is ‘skeptical” about getting justice..I don’t blame them! It is target season on Black males in America! I thought long and hard about writing a piece on this, to vent out how I feel about it..Then I ran across a piece by another mother(& a lawyer) that says it ALL…

Grilled Apples and Oranges

Any beer will work

With our kitchen renovation underway, we’ve been digging a lot of frozen chili out of the freezer, hitting the deli hard and of course grilling. Most grilled oranges call for removing the pith, but when you’re cutting board is a paper plate you’re not going to mess around with that nonsense. We also worried the oranges would fall through the grill slots. No grill baskets in this house. We thought that all in all they turned out well, but we sure wished it was the height of summer and we had some fresh mint.

Grilled Apples and Oranges

  • 1 large navel orange, sliced
  • 1 apple (griller’s choice), sliced and cored
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 oz Grand Marnier
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp melted butter

Whisk liquor, butter, juice and honey together in a large bowl. Stir in fruit and refrigerate for up to two hours…

The Secular States of America.

The United States is not a Christian nation, any more than the United States is an Atheist nation, or a Hindu nation, or a Poseidon nation. The United States is a secular nation.

Whenever a debate is raised over the issue of whether or not the United States was a found a Christian nation, we are entertained with quotes from the founding fathers either professing their belief in a God or their secular credentials, both sets of quotes used to justify both positions. What we rarely see, are the lengths the founders went to in order to ensure a secular framework for the new nation, and the context in which they fought for it. Their personal beliefs in a God or an organised religion are irrelevant. The meticulous work and reasoned writings – of framers like Jefferson and Pinckney – to ensure the constitution was based upon secular principles, is…

The True Meaning Of 'In Sickness And In Health'

‘wellyjup’ shared what happened:

Full story: we met, and it was that magic thing where you just know. We moved in, adopted cats, and built a life together. His synethesisers and video games intermingled with my law books and we were happy. He was and is the best person I’ve ever met.
That day was sticky Melbourne summer and we decided to have some pre-dinner fun. After he finished, he clutched his head and said that he had the worst headache ever. He fell off the bed onto the floor and start to convulse and vomit. He was unconscious for about a minute, and then when he came to he couldn’t stand. I asked him if he was ok, and his words came out a slur, like someone who’d been drinking for days. Turns out…
