Breaking news: today, the Montana Judicial Standards Commission filed a formal complaint against District Judge G. Todd Baugh for his actions in the Cherice Morales case. According to the Billings Gazette, “Commission attorney Malin Stearns Johnson said Baugh, 72, eroded public confidence in the courts with his statements and actions in the case.” As a result, the board is recommending that the Montana Supreme Court formally discipline the district court judge.

The Commission’s decision in this case is a historic moment for Montana. This decision sends a clear message to the Montana law enforcement community that our state will not stand by while our most vulnerable citizens are attacked. This decision is a statement to victims of abuse that they can seek help with confidence, knowing that they will not be shamed or wrongfully blamed for the harm that was done to them. Though there is still much that can and should be done to protect victims in our state and around the world, this is an important step in the right direction.

Thank you to each and every one of you that signed our petition, that wrote letters to the Board or your local newspaper, that joined in protests: your dedication made this possible. Though this may be a small moment in each of our individual lives, let us hope that this means a world of difference to the next Cherice Morales who needs our help.

  1. He should be horse whipped and even that might be too kind.

    • That is too kind. He caused a killer/child rapist to go free. Much worse that being “disciplined.”

  2. Bravo!
