US leaders to skip Sochi Paralympics: Rep. Duckworth delegation canceled

WASHINGTON–In the wake of Russia moving troops to Ukraine, the U.S. presidential delegation to the Sochi paralympics is canceled, a White House official said Monday. Rep. Tammy Duckworth D-Ill., a wounded Iraq war vet, was selected to lead the U.S. presidential delegation and she was to have left on Wednesday for the games.

“In addition to other measures we are taking in response to the situation in Ukraine, the United States will no longer send a Presidential Delegation to the upcoming Winter Paralympic Games in Sochi. President Obama continues to strongly support all of the U.S. athletes who will participate in the Paralympics and wishes them great success in the Olympic competition,” the White House said.

Duckworth said in a statement, “As a member of Congress, it is my first priority to ensure the safety of my constituents and all Americans. I remain appalled by the immoral and illegal actions of the Russian government and believe that there must be consequences for its behavior. The international community must stand together to support the sovereignty of the Ukraine and end the suffering of its people.”

“The Paralympic Games are an inspiration to millions of disabled people around the globe and it is tragic that the reckless actions of the Russian government are jeopardizing them. Still, these brave Paralympians have shown tremendous perseverance throughout their entire lives and I know they will make all Americans proud in Sochi. ”

The United Kingdom announced its leaders are boycotting the upcoming Sochi Paralympics.

I just talked with a USA Paralympics official and confirmed: The games are on. Most of the U.S. athletes are in or en route to Sochi. What has changed is that government officials will not attend the games to rebuke Russia that there are consequences to its military aggression in Ukraine.

The Paralympics games run from March 7 through March 16.

British Prime Minister David Cameron wrote on his Twitter account, “Because of the serious situation in Ukraine, @WilliamJHague & I believe it would be wrong for UK Ministers to attend the Sochi Paralympics. “Because of the serious situation in Ukraine, (Foreign Secretary) William Hague and I believe it would be wrong for UK Ministers to attend the Sochi Paralympics.”

The G-7 leaders already announced they were suspending planning for the June G-8 Summit in Sochi.

  4. Reblogged this on It Is What It Is and commented:
These are skipped because of tensions in Ukraine but not the previous ones because of crass violation of human rights??

  5. Ah, they skip this one but not the Winter games???

    • Excellent post, J!!!

      • Good morning to you Sis, how are you doing today in Paradise? It’s Fat Tuesday!!

      • Hey!!! GM …. the sky is gray. It’s muggy and it seems it’s going to rain.

I’m good. Seems like youtube is working.
Could you try the Dr. Seuss & Joe’s video to see if it works for you?

Have a great day!! Hugs … :-) … from the heart!!

      • The video worked when I reblogged it the 1st time but the reblog didn’t show up at all on my page, thats not you tube, thats wordpress. After you reblog a post once, whether it loads and shows up or not, you can’t reblog it a second time…another mistake of wordpress.

      • I know …. getting to agree with you. WP sucks …. and Facebook too.
But … what would I do without them??

Going out to the PT place for “wellness” exercises in a bit.

      • Don’t get wet in the rain. I hardly ever use FB, just post to FB from my blog automatically. I am mostly on Twitter more than anything, great source for news as it happens.

      • It is ….. did you see the selfie at Oscars that crashed Twitter??

      • I did, I actually watched the entire broadcast…one of the best ever because of Ellen’s hosting.

      • Agreed!!! Hugs … more later. Have to get ready. Finishing 1st post ….. Luv ya, bro!!

      • OK, you be careful out, I’m going swimming. Ciao Bella.

      • The pizza skit was priceless.

      • Yes!! And the guy was for real!! Raised $$ for charities!

      • Yes, it was very refreshing to watch all that unfold, usually I surf during award shows but not this one.

      • I didn’t catch the end … It was recording and missed the most important selections. :-(

      • Your post on the Oscars was very good. I believe I reblogged it, saved me doing one.

      • TY … Did all the videos come out?? Hugs!

      • Yes, I saw all of ‘em…it was cool to see the ones you posted again.

      • Good, arrived for my exercise. Be well my dearest friend!!

    • I totally boycotted the winter games, did the American delegation not skip going to the winter games? I thought they did? The American athletes are still going to the Paralympics, just not the delegation.
