MRS. OBAMA:  Hi, everybody!  What are you guys doing in here?  Are you making Easter cards?  Yes?  Well, I’m going to come by and see you.  I brought two friends with me today — Sunny and Bo.  They’re here!  And I also brought some goodies from the pastry chef, so there’s some cookies for you guys if you all behave and your parents say you can have some.  (Laughter.)  There are cookies for you.

But one of the reasons why I like to come to the Fisher House is to shine a light on all the great things that the Fisher House staff do here.  I mean, I know that they give you guys a home away from home when you’re going through some of the toughest times in your life.  And it’s nice to be able to come to a beautiful facility like this where I know the staff is so — yes!  What?  (Laughter.)  There’s something important here.  (Laughter.)

(Child hands Mrs. Obama an Easter card.)

Let me see.  Oh, my gosh.  It’s Happy Easter!  I love it!  See, this is why I come here.  This is the best part of my day — with so many great families, you guys.  But, more importantly, I get to shine a light on you all, the families — our military families and our military kids.  Because you all are our heroes, especially our kids.  Do you know — hey, hey, kids, do you guys know you’re heroes?

CHILDREN:  Yes.

MRS. OBAMA:  You are.  You guys are heroes.  You’re — yes, that’s Spiderman.

MOTHER:  Spidergirl.

MRS. OBAMA:  Spidergirl, yes.  (Laughter.)  An important hero.  Because you guys do what you do and make your parents’ lives so wonderful, they’re able to do the job that they do.  And I know your parents couldn’t do this without you guys.  So we’re so proud of you all.

And to show just how grateful — are these mine to keep?

CHILD:  Yes.

MRS. OBAMA:  Are these mine?  Okay!  (Laughter.)  But because the President and I are so grateful to all of you, I have a little surprise, too.  We’ve got this really cool thing that happens at the White House on Monday.  It’s the Easter Egg Roll, and it’s a day full of fun.  We’ve got 30,000 people who come to the South Lawn.  And you can do Easter egg rolls, and learn how to cook healthy and eat healthy, and jump around.  And there’s entertainment.  There are cool bands and groups and people you guys will know, and a lot of characters and face painting.  And I brought tickets for all of you guys to come on Monday if you’re free.  (Laughter.)  If you’re free.

So I brought tickets for all of you to come to the White House on Monday.  All right?  So if you guys have time — the tickets are here, and hopefully I’ll see you guys on Monday.

Happy Passover

Happy Passover

Statement from the President on Passover

Michelle and I send our warmest greetings to all those celebrating Passover in the United States, in Israel, and around the world.

On Tuesday, just as we have every year of my presidency, my family will join the millions taking part in the ancient tradition of the Seder.  We will enjoy the company of friends and loved ones, retell a timeless story, and give thanks for the freedom we are so blessed to enjoy.

Yet even as we celebrate, our prayers will be with the people of Overland Park, Kansas and the family and friends of the three innocent people who were killed when a gunman, just one day before Passover, opened fire at a Jewish community center and retirement home on Sunday.  As Americans, we will continue to stand united against this kind of terrible violence, which has no place in our society.  We will continue to come together across faiths to combat the ignorance and intolerance, including anti-Semitism, that can lead to hatred and violence.  And we will never lose faith that compassion and justice will ultimately triumph over hate and fear.

For that is one of the great lessons of the Exodus.  The tale of the Hebrew slaves and their flight from Egypt carries the hope and promise that the Jewish people have held in their hearts for thousands of years, and it is has inspired countless generations in their own struggles for freedom around the globe.

In America, the Passover story has always had special meaning.  We come from different places and diverse backgrounds, but we are bound together by a journey from bondage to liberty enshrined in our founding documents and continued in each generation.  As we were so painfully reminded on Sunday, our world is still in need of repair, but the story of the Exodus teaches us that with patience, determination, and abundant faith, a brighter future is possible.

Chag Sameach.

Biden, Kerry Greet World Cup Trophy in First Tour Stop

By BY SUZANNE GAMBOA & NBC News

Vice President Joe Biden plans to head to Brazil this summer to attend the 2014 FIFA World Cup and cheer the U.S. national team at on of its games.

Brazil expects 600,000 foreign visitors and 3 million Brazilian tourists during the monthlong tournament, according to The Associated Press.

The trophy to be awarded the winner of this year’s World Cup soccer (fútbol) tournament made a stop Monday in Washington, D.C. at the State Department where Biden and Secretary of State John Kerry were on hand to welcome it and make a few remarks.

The stop was the first of the Trophy Tour preceding the tournament that begins June 12. Before the presentation, athletes from youth soccer organizations batted around a soccer ball with Kerry and DC United players.

At the ceremony, Kerry expressed excitement at the possibility of a match between the United States and Brazil, adding, “to do that the United States has to get through Germany, Portugal and Ghana.” Those opponents have been called one of the “Groups of Death” in the tournament and U.S. faces a serious challenge in emerging the winner.

Biden said he played the other football, but his grandchildren play soccer. “One of the great advantages of being vice president, I’m able to take _ if I’m not going to a war zone _ one of my grandchildren with me … And the only thing all my girls said is they want to go to the World Cup,” Biden said.

Whether Brazil will be ready for the event is a worry. Three stadiums still are under construction and the country expects street protests, according to the AP.

Thank you SUZANNE GAMBOA & NBC News.

Statement by Vice President Biden on the Passing of Nuala Pell

Jill and I were saddened to hear of the passing of our dear friend, Nuala Pell. She and her husband, Senator Clairborne Pell, were among our closest friends. They embraced me in my earliest days in the Senate, after I had lost my wife and daughter. I spent many memorable evenings in their company, and through all the years we served together, I always knew I had a welcome home in Washington with the Pells.

I also remember the love and partnership that marked their marriage. Senator Pell used to keep a pillow in his office embroidered with the words, “Happiness is being married to your best friend.” Nuala and Claiborne worked side by side on every issue, whether it was on behalf of the elderly, or women’s health care, or the arts and humanities, or access to education. After Claiborne passed, Nuala continued her lifetime of service, creating the Nuala Pell Leadership Program in Public Service to give future leaders the skills to enter public service. Her lifetime of service will live on through the next generation of leaders she helped grow, and in the hearts of her many friends.

Jarred Minced Garlic – Homemade!

Constantly chopping garlic is something that can lead to a smelly, sticky kitchen and fingers. In order to cut (no pun intended) my time down in the kitchen, I have found that making my own minced garlic is a BIG time-saver for meal prep – whether it’s for seasoning meat, veggies, or making dressing. I simply mince a whole head of garlic (or more), sprinkle with a bit of salt (to act as a preservative), place it in a mason jar, and pour in olive oil until just covered. Store it in your fridge and pull out when needed. Better than the store-bought jars and better than making a mess every time you need some garlic!
