President Barack Obama, in Mountain View, Calif. visits a Walmart on Friday to talk about his energy programs and new public and private committments and executive actions to cut carbon pollution. Walmart, often a target of the left because of its labor policies, gets the presidential visit to highlight, according to the White House, its pledge “to double the number of onsite solar energy projects at U.S. stores, Sam’s Clubs, and Distribution Centers by 2020, as part of their commitment to drive the production or procurement of 7 billion kWh of renewable energy by the end of the decade.”

The leader of an Islamic extremist group in Nigeria says his group has started kidnapping women and children as part of its bloody guerrilla campaign against the country’s government, according to a video released Monday. Scores of girls and young women kidnapped from a school in Nigeria are being forced to marry their Islamic extremist abductors, a civic organization reported Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet (bah-cheh-LET’) is planning a visit with President Barack Obama next month.

The White House announced the June 30 meeting on Thursday. The announcement said their discussions will include global security, trade and cooperation on energy and science.

Bachelet was sworn back into office two months ago after a four-year break.

Bachelet is a moderate socialist who became Chile’s first female president in 2006. The Chilean Constitution does not allow a president to serve two consecutive terms.

  • On Friday, the President hosted German Chancellor Angela Merkel for a bilateral meeting in the Oval Office, a joint press conference in the Rose Garden and a working lunch.
  • Later, the President met with AAPI business and faith leaders as they held a discussion on commonsense immigration reform.
  • The First Lady travelled to the University of Texas San Antonio’s Annual College Signing Day, where she spoke about her new Reach Higher education initiative.

  • On Monday, the President hosted President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti for a bilateral meeting in the Oval Office to highlight Djiboutis importance to regional security.
  • Later that day, the President spoke on immigration reformat a celebration of the 152nd anniversary of Cinco de Mayo.


Tuesday, May 6th

  • On Tuesday, the President participated in “Weather at the White House”, a series of interviews with both local and national meteorologists to discuss that day’s release of the third National Climate Assessment.


Wednesday, May 7th

  • On Wednesday, the President traveled to central Arkansas to tour the states tornado damage.
  • Later, the President traveled to California to speak at the Shoah Foundations’ 20th Anniversary Gala.
