Printed copy of Petition to be Delivered to Staples Corporate Today!

By Sue Whistleblower

This is it! The day where all our hard work pays off! A 10 lb box of printed signatures was sent to Staples Corporate Headquarters and is scheduled to be delivered today!

If Staples doesn’t respond within a week, I would like to schedule a Call-In to the Office of the President on Monday February 3rd.

Dear Ron Sargent:
I am a part-time employee of your company, Staples. I have served Staples faithfully for many years, and have earned your company far more income than you have paid me over that time. On January 4th, 2014, a policy was enacted at your retail stores that limited part-time employees to 25 hours a week. I have worked over 25 hours a week for the entirety of my employment at your company, as have a vast majority of your part-time staff. I inquired about the reason of the policy up the chain of command, and was not given a straight answer at every level.
402528_176619879142958_864642698_n
It is for this reason, that we the part-time employees of Staples, hereby petition your company for the following actions:
402528_176619879142958_864642698_n
1. Amend your policy to at least 35 hours a week for part-time employees or abolish said policy.
402528_176619879142958_864642698_n
2. If there are reasons this cannot be done, Staples is to make an honest and truthful public statement as to why.
You are probably wondering under what authority we as employees have the right to demand such changes from the CEO of a company. As Customer Service Representatives, it is not only our duty to represent the company to the customer, it is also our duty to represent the customer to the company. Enclosed is a printed copy of over 200,000 signatures of people who disagree with your current actions and demand you change your policy. Most of them are your customers and have pledged not to shop at your stores until you take corrective action.
402528_176619879142958_864642698_n
We know that thousands of other companies have been enacting similar policies for one reason, the Affordable Health Care Act. We also know that the medical insurance you currently offer through Aetna does not meet the minimum standards of the law. The ACA states that any employee working over 30 hours a week is entitled to health insurance, or the company faces steep fines. We understand that paying those fines would be an unacceptable cost to your corporation. However, we encourage Staples to be more open as to why this company is enacting such changes. If complying with the law would cost Staples hundreds of millions of dollars, then speak out!
402528_176619879142958_864642698_n
If you truly need to enact such policies to avoid hefty fees, and to give you time to research ways to comply with the law that meet the needs of both the company and its employees, then please make this known in a public statement!
402528_176619879142958_864642698_n
We also hereby inform you that we will use all lawful means to petition your company until we receive an answer, and that this letter will be distributed to all petition signers.

This Is The Affordable Care Act: Giving Women At High Risk For Breast Cancer Access To Free Chemoprevention Medication

More than 20 years ago, my personal involvement in the fight against breast cancer started after four of my friends were diagnosed with the disease in the same year. After one of those friends lost her battle, I saw just what a ruthless adversary breast cancer could be. Far too many of us have lost a loved one to breast cancer or seen a colleague or friend endure painful treatments to fight the disease.

That is why I am so pleased that today the Administration is making clear that most health insurance plans must soon cover chemoprevention medications like tamoxifen and raloxifene that can reduce the risk of breast cancer for women who have an increased chance of developing the disease. In addition, these health plans will have to cover the medications at no cost to these women.

Women who are at high risk of developing breast cancer face many questions. Now, if their doctor recommends that the benefits of this treatment outweigh the risks, one question women across the country won’t have to ask is whether they can afford it.

This is just one more way the Affordable Care Act is helping fight breast cancer. Already, the ACA ensures that about 47 million women have access to free mammograms every year or two, that insurance companies can no longer deny coverage or increase premiums due to pre-existing conditions like breast cancer, and new health plans can no longer set an annual or lifetime cap on someone’s health insurance benefits – meaning women diagnosed with breast cancer will not max out their insurance benefits while seeking treatment.

For breast cancer survivors, these changes can make all the difference. I met Myrna Rodriguez Previte, in 2012. In 2003, Myrna, a self-employed real estate broker, was refused health coverage when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 36. Thankfully, Myrna eventually got covered on her husband’s policy, but because of the Affordable Care Act, it is now illegal for an insurance company to drop people like Myrna from coverage because they receive a breast cancer diagnosis.

This fight is personal for so many of us, including me. Not just for the friends and family who have already received a breast cancer diagnosis, but for our friends, sisters, daughters, and mothers who are at increased risk of developing breast cancer.

Weekly Address: Time to Pass Bipartisan Legislation to Extend Emergency Unemployment Insurance

January 04, 2014 | 3:18 |Public Domain

In this week’s address, President Obama says Congress should act to extend emergency unemployment insurance for more than one million Americans who have lost this vital economic lifeline while looking for a job.

VIDEO MENSAJE DE LA CASA BLANCA: El Congreso debe extender el seguro de desempleo

January 04, 2014 | 3:04 |Public Domain

Statement by Gene B. Sperling, Director of the National Economic Council

This New Year’s Day, there is likely less joy and more fear and distress in the homes of 1.3 million Americans who this week have seen their unemployment insurance suddenly cut off – a vital lifeline that these Americans depend on as they fight to find a job. There would be no better New Year’s resolution for Congress to make today than to commit to making the first new legislation for the new year the restoration of emergency unemployment insurance for those who have this week just been cut off.

Failing to extend emergency unemployment insurance through 2014 will negatively impact 14 million Americans – the 4.9 million workers who will see unemployment insurance cut off and the approximately 9 million additional family members they are supporting. But if Congress does the right thing and acts to extend emergency unemployment benefits through 2014, it is estimated to lead to 200,000 jobs and a fifth of a point of additional economic growth. This emergency unemployment insurance is temporary and by design will taper off as the unemployment falls around the nation.

The claims by some that those experiencing long-term unemployment are solely at fault are belied by the countless accounts of the names, faces and stories of responsible Americans among those 1.3 million who have worked hard their whole lives and are fighting to find a new job to support their families. Because these workers are only eligible for this emergency assistance if they are actively looking for work, extension will help encourage many of the long-term unemployed to keep at it even if they are getting discouraged.

We as Americans can choose to have each other’s backs when we face serious spells of long-term unemployment. In more than 50 years, we have never cut off emergency unemployment insurance when the rate of long-term unemployment was even above 50% of its current level, even though none of those recessions were nearly as deep as the one we are now recovering from. Serious studies make clear that those who are long-term unemployed face serious barriers to getting new jobs than can lead to lasting damage to their economic future. At a time when we as a nation should be moving forward in our efforts to help those who are long-term unemployed find new jobs, we should not take a harsh step backwards by abruptly cutting off their unemployment insurance.

The President strongly supports Majority Leader Harry Reid’s commitment to bring the bipartisan Reed-Heller bill for a vote the very first day the Senate returns on January 6th. By temporarily extending emergency unemployment insurance for three months, this bipartisan bill will provide benefits for over 2 million Americans when they need it most, and we urge every member of Congress to support this vitally important bill.

New Health Insurance Options, New Consumer Protections: New Year. A New Day in Health Care Coverage. New Year, New Coverage

Today is a new day for the millions of Americans who finally have the security that comes from quality, affordable health coverage. And those who already have health insurance will have better, more reliable coverage than ever before. From now on, insured Americans won’t be forced to put off a check-up or worry about going broke if they get sick.

Here is one such success story:

Dennis Taylor Submitted on 2014/01/02 at 16:01 in Response To: ACA success stories blog

For the better part of 30 years my wife and I have had employer based health insurance and we understand this game very well. This year, we intentionally opted out of our employer based health insurance to see what is out there via the health exchanges. In our case, we live in Arizona and I am so thrilled that our governor did not decide to screw over the citizens of the state by doing what corrupt governors of other states have done to their citizens by rejecting the ACA in their states. You people really do not represent your citizens and you are just screwing them over for no good or justifiable reason.

In any case…here is what it all boils down to for me and my family as well as others who choose to go the route of the ACA Health Exchanges. Far superior insurance coverage than anything we’ve ever had in the last 28 to 30 years with a smaller premium, smaller deductible and smaller co-pays. This is possible due to the ACA because for the first time, insurance companies can now compete with each other for our business.

Yes….we got a top of the line “platinum” level plan that has far superior coverage to anything we’ve ever had in past years through our employers, with a cost savings of almost $400.00 per month for the premium, a radically smaller deductible and smaller co-pays.

And for the record…this is all happening without any government assistance or government subsidies. Our household income disqualifies us from receiving government subsidies and we are reaping all these benefits and cost savings.

Kudos to President Obama and all who worked hard to make the Affordable Care Act a reality!

Thank you Dennis Taylor.

While there is much more work to be done, beginning today, no family will be denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition like high blood pressure or asthma. Women can no longer be charged more than men for the same coverage. No American will have to worry that losing a job means you can’t get health coverage. And small businesses may qualify for more financial help to pay for new affordable coverage options for their employees.

The challenges in our health care system were decades in the making and won’t be solved overnight, but now more than 6 million Americans have been enrolled in Marketplace or Medicaid coverage and are getting peace of mind, knowing that they can get the care they need without losing everything they’ve worked and saved for.

NEW BENEFITS AND CONSUMER PROTECTIONSBEGIN TODAY

  • Protections for People with Pre-Existing ConditionsUp to 129 million Americans with pre-existing conditions no longer have to worry about being denied health coverage or charged higher premiums because of their health status.
  • New Insurance Options: Many previously uninsured Americans have new health insurance options through private health plans in the Marketplace or Medicaid in States that have opted to expand it. Nearly 6 in 10 of Americans who were uninsured could pay $100 or less per month for coverage.
  • No More Annual Caps on Health Benefits: Millions of Americans no longer have to worry about having their health benefits cut off after they reach an annual dollar limit on benefits.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: Health plans in the individual and small group markets are now required to cover ten categories of essential health benefits – including emergency services, maternity and newborn care, mental health and substance use disorder services, and prescription drug coverage. As a result of these new protections, approximately 60 million people will gain expanded mental health and substance use disorder benefits and/or parity protections.

#GetCovered – Trinace’s Story

Published on Jan 2, 2014

In October, President Obama met with Americans who are getting covered thanks to the Affordable Care Act. This is Trinaces’s story. Get covered at http://www.healthcare.gov

As we ring in the start of 2014, today millions of Americans across the country will finally have the security and peace of mind that comes from having quality, affordable health insurance coverage. Today is the first day that coverage kicks in for more than 6 million people who purchased private health insurance plans through the Marketplaces, or signed up for coverage through Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

One of those Americans is Trinace Edwards, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor shortly after being laid off and losing her insurance. Unable to work or afford private insurance, she has not received treatment. Her daughter Lenace, a student at the University of Maryland, had considered dropping out of school in order to help pay for her mother’s bills.

When Trinace began shopping for coverage after the Health Insurance Marketplace opened, she learned she would be eligible for coverage through Medicaid. Starting today, Trinace can get the health care she needs, without forcing her daughter to give up on her dreams.

In October, President Obama met with a group of Americans – including Trinace and Lenace – who are benefitting from the Affordable Care Act. Watch what the mother and daughter had to say to him about what the law means for their family.
