Statement by NSC Spokesperson Caitlin Hayden on Ukraine

Statement by NSC Spokesperson Caitlin Hayden on Ukraine

The United States is encouraged by President Yanukovych’s decision to pardon former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko and former Environment Minister Heorhiy Filipchuk.  This is an important step toward addressing concerns about democracy and the rule of law in Ukraine, however much more remains to be done.  We urge Ukrainian authorities to end all politically motivated prosecutions, undertake comprehensive judicial reform to ensure such selective justice does not recur, and fully implement the OSCE recommendations made after the 2012 parliamentary elections.  The United States strongly supports the aspirations of the Ukrainian people for a democratic, prosperous, and European future, which can only be realized through continued democratic reform and adherence to the rule of law.  We remain dedicated to strengthening our bilateral relationship on the basis of our shared transatlantic values.

Statement from the President on the Passing of Baroness Margaret Thatcher

Statement from the President on the Passing of Baroness Margaret Thatcher

With the passing of Baroness Margaret Thatcher, the world has lost one of the great champions of freedom and liberty, and America has lost a true friend.  As a grocer’s daughter who rose to become Britain’s first female prime minister, she stands as an example to our daughters that there is no glass ceiling that can’t be shattered.  As prime minister, she helped restore the confidence and pride that has always been the hallmark of Britain at its best.  And as an unapologetic supporter of our transatlantic alliance, she knew that with strength and resolve we could win the Cold War and extend freedom’s promise.

Here in America, many of us will never forget her standing shoulder to shoulder with President Reagan, reminding the world that we are not simply carried along by the currents of history—we can shape them with moral conviction, unyielding courage and iron will.   Michelle and I send our thoughts to the Thatcher family and all the British people as we carry on the work to which she dedicated her life—free peoples standing together, determined to write our own destiny.

Recognizing Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Lynn Rosenthal

April 08, 2013
11:26 AM EDT

Every April, we recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This year, with rape in the headlines nearly every day, we speak out with even greater urgency to honor survivors and prevent sexual violence.

We know the devastating the statistics: 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men have been raped in their lifetimes. That’s 18 million women in this country who have been raped, and more than 1 million rapes that occur every year. The vast majority of these assaults occur when the victims are under the age of 25, and those under the age of 18 are at the greatest risk. These numbers are real, but they don’t tell the whole story. They don’t tell of the broken trust when the attacker is a friend, a trusted colleague, or a family member.  They don’t tell of the suicidal feelings, the depression, or of the PTSD. And, they don’t tell of the courage survivors demonstrate when they work every day to put their lives back together.

Across the federal government, we are working to support survivors and to prevent sexual violence. Last year, the Department of Justice modernized the definition of rape used to collect our nation’s crime statistics. This year, the Department of Justice is working with law enforcement agencies to implement this change and develop new guidelines for investigating sexual assault cases. The Office on Violence Against Women is funding training that will help communities address their backlogs of rape kits and improve prosecution of sexual assault crimes. The Office of Victims of Crime is supporting the development of a telemedicine center that will help bring sexual assault forensic exams to victims in rural and isolated communities.

Two years ago, the Vice President announced the winners of the Apps Against Abuse, a challenge to app developers to use this technology to help prevent dating violence and sexual assault. Today, one of those winners -Circle of 6 - had reached 55,000 downloads in 26 countries and justannounced a customized version of their app for use in India.

On March 7, President Obama signed the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act into law. This legislation is ground-breaking in its approach to sexual assault. States must set aside funds to develop programs that meaningfully address rape and sexual assault including those committed by strangers, acquaintances, and intimate partners as well as alcohol and drug facilitated rapes. This means more training for law enforcement and prosecutors and more resources for victim services. College campuses must provide orientation programs to new students about dating violence and sexual assault and must develop clear, written policies about how these cases will be handled.  Federally subsidized housing programs must protect sexual assault victims from being evicted or denied housing due to the assault committed against them, and must help a victim transfer to another housing unit if necessary.

Government can’t do it all, and nowhere is private sector support more important than on issues like sexual violence. We applaud the work of Mariska Hargitay and the Joyful Heart Foundation to address the rape kit backlog, and of the No More Campaign working to raise awareness about domestic violence and sexual assault.  Finally this April, we honor the advocates who devote their lives to serving victims and survivors.

Together, we are working to change the culture so that one day, we will end sexual violence.

Texas District Attorney And His Wife Shot To Death In Home

By Jueseppi B.

Investigators outside the home of Mike McLelland, the Kaufman County district attorney, and his wife Cynthia, who were both found shot dead on Saturday.  It was the second fatal shooting of a prosecutor in Kaufman County in two months.

From The New York Times:

Texas Prosecutor Shot to Death Two Months After Assistant’s Killing

By   Published: March 31, 2013

Lauren D’Avolio contributed reporting from Kaufman, and Michael Schwirtz and Serge F. Kovaleski from New York.

KAUFMAN, Tex. — The district attorney in this largely rural county southeast of Dallas and his wife were found shot to death at their home on Saturday night in Forney, Tex., two months after one of his prosecutors was shot and killed while walking to the courthouse here.

The fatal shootings of the district attorney, Mike McLelland, 63, of Kaufman County, and his wife, Cynthia, 65, stunned law enforcement officials and local residents, many of whom were still shaken by the killing of one of Mr. McLelland’s prosecutors, Mark E. Hasse, 57, who was killed on Jan. 31 in a parking lot near the courthouse.

The authorities said it was too early to say if the deaths of Mr. McLelland and his wife were connected to Mr. Hasse’s shooting. But the timing of the shootings — and the killings of two prosecutors in a county of 106,000 people in the span of eight weeks — appeared to many officials to be more than coincidence.

“I’m really trying to stress for people to remain calm,” said Mayor Darren Rozell of Forney. “This appeared to be a targeted attack and not a random attack.” Forney is about 15 miles northwest of the city of Kaufman, the county seat.

Officials from several local, state and federal agencies — including the F.B.I., the Texas Rangers and the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Department — were working on the case.

The Kaufman County sheriff, David A. Byrnes, told reporters at a news conference on Sunday that his officers had been called to Mr. McLelland’s house shortly after 6 p.m. on Saturday and that the bodies of Mr. McLelland and his wife were then discovered inside. He would not say if there were any signs of forced entry.

Sheriff Byrnes said he had increased protection for other local elected officials and would be tightening security at the courthouse, although he would not go into detail.

“It’s unnerving to the law enforcement community, to the community at large,” he said. “That’s why we’re striving to assure the community that we are protecting public safety and will continue to do that.”

In the shooting of Mr. Hasse, the authorities said one or two gunmen had gotten out of a gray or silver sedan, opened fire and fled. Witnesses told investigators that the suspect or suspects appeared to have had their faces covered and were wearing black clothing and tactical-style vests. No arrests have been made, and investigators from nine agencies have been searching for leads.

After Mr. Hasse’s killing, Mr. McLelland appeared alongside the county sheriff and the police chief from the city of Kaufman, vowing to find those responsible and referring to the suspect or suspects as “scum.”

“I hope that the people that did this are watching, because we’re very confident that we’re going to find you, we’re going to pull you out of whatever hole you’re in, we’re going to bring you back and let the people of Kaufman County prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law,” he told reporters.

Doug Lowe, the district attorney in nearby Anderson County and a friend of Mr. McLelland’s, said the latest shootings “were a blow to all Texas prosecutors.”

“We’re a tight-knit group,” Mr. Lowe said. “I don’t think anyone in my group will be in fear. We’re not going to let this stand in the way of getting the bad guys.”

One of several angles that investigators have been exploring is whether Mr. Hasse’s killing involved members of the Aryan Brotherhood, the white supremacist gang that is active in prisons. Prosecutors in Mr. McLelland’s office had assisted in investigations of the gang, including a recent case that had targeted the Brotherhood’s leadership.

In that case, the federal authorities announced in November that a grand jury in Houston had indicted more than 30 senior Brotherhood leaders and other members of the gang on racketeering charges. Federal officials said the defendants had agreed to commit killings, robberies, arsons and kidnappings and to traffic narcotics on behalf of the gang. The indictments stemmed from an investigation led by a multi-agency task force that included prosecutors from Kaufman County and three other district attorney’s offices. A month later, the Texas Department of Public Safety issued a statewide bulletin warning officials that the Aryan Brotherhood was planning to retaliate against officials who had helped secure the indictments.

Mr. Hasse was shot the same day that two Aryan Brotherhood members — Ben Christian Dillon, also known as “Tuff,” of Houston, and James Marshall Meldrum, who nickname is “Dirty,” of Dallas — pleaded guilty to racketeering charges in Federal District Court in Houston.

A law enforcement official said there was no evidence so far in the investigation of Mr. Hasse’s killing that pointed to the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation was still continuing, said that investigators believed the shootings of Mr. Hasse and Mr. McLelland were related but appeared to have been carried out by different people, perhaps from the same group or with the same affiliation.

But Sheriff Byrnes said he had no indication that the shootings of Mr. McLelland and his wife were the work of the Brotherhood.

Investigators have also been pursuing possible links between Mr. Hasse’s killing and the death of Tom Clements, the Colorado state prisons chief, who was shot and killed two weeks ago at his home in Monument, Colo., near Colorado Springs.

The suspect in Mr. Clements’s killing, Evan S. Ebel, 28, died after a shootout and high-speed chase with Texas law enforcement officers and sheriff’s deputies in Wise County, northwest of Dallas, on March 21. There were a number reports that Mr. Ebel had joined a white-supremacist gang known as the 211 Crew while he was in a Colorado prison, but the authorities said they were still investigating any possible links.

Officials in Colorado Springs who have been investigating Mr. Clements’s killing spoke on Sunday with investigators in Texas, but Paula Presley, the undersheriff in El Paso County, Colo., said it was still too early to say whether there were any connections between the killings. She said that Mr. McLelland’s killing was “very, very concerning” and that it had raised an already heightened sense of alert in Colorado.

Mr. McLelland was a 23-year veteran of the Army who served in the first Iraq war, according to a biography on the Web site of the Kaufman County district attorney’s office. He also worked as a diagnostic psychologist for Texas government agencies.

He served for 18 years as a criminal defense attorney and special prosecutor for the Department of Family and Protective Services. He and his wife had five children, including one son who is a Dallas police officer.

Thanks to The New York Times for this report.

Guess what….law enforcement sources say the weapon used in this assassination of the District Attorney & his wife was an AR-15. An assault weapon. Assault weapons are useful for one thing only…..killing humans.

How Many People Have Been Killed by Guns Since Newtown?

Answer is: 3,164 humans have dies since Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14th, 2012.

That’s Three Thousand One Hundred & Sixth Four human lives erased in the 107 days since the Newtown, Connecticut massacre.

Keep Up to Date on President Obama’s Immigration Proposal

Cecilia Muñoz
By  Cecilia Muñoz  February 06, 2013

Last week the President traveled to Nevada to redouble his Administration’s efforts to work with Congress to enact bipartisan common-sense reform to fix our nation’s broken immigration system. In his remarks the President pointed out that we need a system under which everyone plays by the same rules: “The question now is simple: do we have the resolve as a people, as a country, as a government to finally put this issue behind us?”

The President believes that we do, but we need the American people engaged to keep Washington moving forward. That’s why he went to Nevada, and that’s why today, we are pleased to share that there is now a new and updated online resource center available through the White House website to help you stay on top of this critical debate. The new website, which you can find at WhiteHouse.gov/Immigration, includes all of the basic resources you’ll need on the issue and on the President’s proposal and will be your guide as we work with Congress on advancing legislation for common-sense immigration reform in the coming weeks and months.

The new site highlights the four principles at the heart of the President’s proposal: continuing to strengthen border security, cracking down on employers that hire undocumented workers, creating a pathway to earned citizenship and streamlining our legal immigration system. And it also includes links to the latest blog posts and videos.

Be sure to visit the new website, but more importantly, stay involved. The President isn’t going to be satisfied until a bill gets to his desk, and your voices are critically important in making that happen.

Sign up to stay involved and receive updates about the White House’s work on immigration.

President Obama Names Sally Jewell to Lead the Department of the Interior

Colleen Curtis
By  Colleen Curtis  February 06, 2013

Speaking in the State Dining Room at the White House, President Obama today announced that he has chosen Sally Jewell to be the next Secretary of the Interior. For the past eight years, Ms. Jewell has been the CEO of REI, one of America’s most successful and environmentally conscious retailers. Previously, she had worked in oil fields in Oklahoma and Colorado, and as an energy expert in banking — experience the President highlighted as he introduced Ms. Jewell to the American people:

So even as Sally has spent the majority of her career outside of Washington — where, I might add, the majority of our interior is located – she is an expert on the energy and climate issues that are going to shape our future. She is committed to building our nation-to-nation relationship with Indian Country. She knows the link between conservation and good jobs.  She knows that there’s no contradiction between being good stewards of the land and our economic progress; that in fact, those two things need to go hand in hand. She has shown that a company with more than $1 billion in sales can do the right thing for our planet.

The President used the occasion to thank Ken Salazar, who served as Secretary of the Interior for President Obama’s first term, for his dedication to the American people and our national treasures, and praised his accomplishments over the last four years:

Since being confirmed, Ken has cracked down on waste. He’s improved the management of the Department to make it work better for the American people. He has ushered in a new era of conservation for our land, our water and our wildlife. He’s established seven new national parks, 10 new national wildlife refuges.  He has opened more public land and water for safe and responsible energy production, not just gas and oil but also wind and solar, creating thousands of new jobs and nearly doubling our use of renewable energy in this country. He has helped to forge what is probably the strongest working relationship with tribal leaders that the federal government has seen in modern times. And when the unexpected has happened — like the Gulf oil spill or Hurricane Sandy — he has been on the ground making sure that people get help right away and we deal with these challenges as professionally as possible.

Four years ago, Vice President Biden spoke at the annual Munich Security Conference to outline the Obama administration’s foreign policy agenda and reset our relationship with Russia. On Tuesday, Vice President Biden wrapped up a similar trip to Europe during which he stressed our strong cooperation with our European allies and highlighted our many joint accomplishments over the last four years.

Travelling first to Berlin, the Vice President met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to discuss our bilateral relationship with Germany and the common challenges we face in Iran, Syria, Mali, and Afghanistan. The Vice President and the German Chancellor also traded views on their respective economies as well as energy and climate change.

Continuing on to Munich, Vice President Biden delivered remarks at the 49th Munich Security Conference and held a series of bilateral meeting with world leaders.  His speech stressed the continued importance the U.S. places on the transatlantic relationship.  “It’s hard to imagine a single threat or opportunity that we cannot address more effectively together,” he said.

In his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Vice President Biden emphasized the importance of the two countries working together in the interest of international peace and security, including in Syria.  The Vice President noted that while the United States and Russia will continue to have serious differences – including, among other things, on human rights and Russia’s recent ban on U.S. adoptions – U.S. and Russian leadership is necessary to achieve practical solutions to the challenges facing the world today.

He also met separately with UN and Arab League Joint Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi, and Moaz al-Khatib, the president of the Syrian Opposition Council, to discuss bringing about a transition that leads to a peaceful, inclusive and democratic Syria, where the rights of all Syrians are protected.

In Paris, French President Francois Hollande hosted a lunch for the Vice President to discuss the French and African mission in Mali and their broader counterterrorism cooperation in the region. The two also exchanged views on Syria, Iran’s nuclear program, the Eurozone, and the U.S.-E.U. economic partnership.

From Ms. Emily L. Hauser:

1,600 Americans fatally shot since Newtown.

More than 1,600, actually. In 55 days.

That averages out to 29 people a day. On Christmas, 30 Americans were killed by guns. On New Year’s Day, it was 58. On Martin Luther King Day, 28. Last Thursday was a good day — only 13 Americans were shot to death that day.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns: Gabrielle On The Hill

By Jueseppi B.

Gabby Giffords made deeply moving opening remarks at today’s Senate hearing on gun violence. This was the first hearing on guns since President Obama stepped forward with his recommendations, and Former Congresswoman Giffords made the most of the opportunity to call on members of Congress to take action now:

“We must do something. It will be hard, but the time is now. You must act. Be bold. Be courageous. Americans are counting on you.”

Please take a minute to watch Gabby Giffords’ powerful speech, and then call on your members of Congress to take action to end gun violence.

Gabby Giffords’ heartfelt appeal to Congress

Uploaded on Jan 30, 2013

Gabby Giffords made deeply moving opening remarks at today’s Senate hearing on gun violence. This was the first hearing on guns since President Obama stepped forward with his recommendations, and Former Congresswoman Giffords made the most of the opportunity to call on members of Congress to take action now.

Former Congresswoman Giffords and her husband Captain Mark Kelly called on Congress to take immediate action.

Here’s what Congress can do right now to reduce gun violence:

  • Stop the sale of military-style assault weapons and high capacity magazines.

  • Make gun trafficking a federal crime with harsh penalties.

These are simple solutions that will save lives. They don’t interfere with the Second Amendment, and they are popular with the overwhelming majority of Americans — including gun owners and NRA members.

We need to follow Gabby Giffords’ lead and call on Congress to act RIGHT NOW:

It’s Been A Week….Whats Different…..

By Jueseppi B.

Absolutely nothing.

Thats the sad part about the aftermath of the lives taken from us at Sandy Hook Elementary School. There has been talk, discussion, deniability,  finger pointing, stupidity, words tossed around.

But no action.

Commissions and press conferences and promises mean nothing Washington. The 28 funerals are what matter. Twenty child coffins…eight adult coffins. And we still have not learned a damn thing.

We’ve placed the blame for this massacre on mental illness.

We’ve placed the blame for this massacre on the absence of God.

We’ve placed the blame for this massacre on bad parenting.

We’ve placed the blame for this massacre on teachers not being armed.

We’ve placed the blame for this massacre on a need for more guns.

We’ve placed the blame for this massacre on everything BUT the reason 28 people are dead in Newtown, Connecticut.

Availability Of Handguns and Assault Weapons.

Availability Of Body Armour.

Availability Of Drum Magazines & Assault Ammo Clips.

Thats why we have to observe 28 Memorial Services.

Thats why we have to observe 28 Funerals.

Thats why we have to observe 28 Burials.

Thats why we have to observe 27 Grieving Families.

We have to do all this because Americans fight to have the right to bear arms.

We have to do all this because Americans fight to have the right to kill one another.

We have to do all this because Americans fight to have the right to own weapons of war.

We have to do all this because Americans fight to have the right to use weapons of mass destruction.

What town will mourn next?

How many will die in the next massacre?

What weapons will be used next time?

How long before we have more mass burials?

Will your family member be next?
