Valentine’s Day: Our Beautiful, and Romantic, National Parks

Jesse Lee
By  Jesse Lee  February 14, 2013  The White House Blog

Happy Valentine’s Day to everybody, but most especially my wife Nita!  We got engaged a little over three years ago in one of our country’s great National Parks, in our case the home of the world’s most famous Portuguese Water Dog (read our story here).  That made me a natural candidate to promote this great new video from the good folks at the Interior Department highlighting some of America’s epic National Park engagements.  For those mulling locations for that most special and anxiety-filled popping of questions, I can’t recommend them highly enough, and they hold up very well in subtle “whose engagement was better” contests.

The coolest Valentine’s Day video you’ll watch all day

Published on Feb 14, 2013

As stewards of America’s National Parks, Wildlife Refuges and other public lands, we get to see many wonderful events on a daily basis. None of which are more exciting than when we see visitors using our Nation’s public lands for their most memorable moments.

Of course they’re also beautiful and romantic for first dates, fifth anniversaries, or random weekends when you can’t think of what to do.  Check out NPS.gov to get started , and here’s the page for the White House if you find yourself nearby.

For more Valentine’s Day engagement intrigue, here’s another charming and bipartisan story about engagements at the US Capitol, which may not be a National Park, but is on the National Park Service‘s National Register of Historic Places — which is still pretty good… I guess.  (Just kidding.)

Securing our Nation’s Borders

Secretary Janet Napolitano
By  Secretary Janet Napolitano  February 14, 2013  The White House Blog

Flying on the U.S. side of the U.S.-Mexico border and overlooking the Rio Grande River, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano tours the border in a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Air and Marine helicopter over Clint, Texas, Feb. 5, 2013. (Official White House Photo by Lawrence Jackson)

Last week, I traveled to San Diego, CA and Clint and El Paso, TX where I saw firsthand the need for more modernized immigration laws that make it harder for criminals and transnational criminal organizations to operate, while encouraging immigrants to choose to pursue a pathway to legal immigration rather than breaking the law.

See a photo gallery of Secretary Napolitano’s visit

Over the past four years, we have dedicated historic levels of personnel, technology, and resources to the Southwest border, and undertaken an unprecedented effort to transform our Nation’s immigration enforcement systems into one that focuses on public safety, border security, and the integrity of the immigration system. We have matched our success at the border with smart, effective immigration enforcement, with a focus on identifying and removing criminal aliens and other public safety threats, recent border crosser’s, repeat violators, and employers who break the law. We have also increased funding to our state and local law enforcement partners to make sure they have the resources they need.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano attends an operational briefing from the federal agencies assigned to border and maritime security operations at U.S. Coast Guard Station San Diego, Calif., Feb. 4, 2013. (Official White House Photo by Lawrence Jackson)

The results of these efforts are clear. Attempts to cross the border illegally are down nearly 80 percent from their peak, seizures of illegal drugs, weapons and other contraband are up, and some of the safest communities in America are found in our border states.

Our immigration system has been broken for too long, and Congress must act. At the Department of Homeland Security, we look forward to continuing to work closely with our many federal, state, local, and tribal partners, to build on the historic progress that we have made to help us keep our communities safe and secure.

On Tuesday, President Obama laid out his agenda for the coming year. Citing the importance of a strong middle class, he provided the framework necessary to move America forward.

The White House Photo Office followed the President throughout the day, and they’ve put together a collection of images from the State of the Union, which include the President greeting Members of Congress, reactions of his speech from the audience and a few special behind the scene looks. Check out the gallery below and visit our State of the Union page to share your own reactions from the State of the Union.

This afternoon, President Obama will sit down for a discussion about the State of the Union and his plan to create jobs and strengthen the middle class. Be sure to check it out.

What You Need to Know About President Obama’s Plan to Provide High-Quality Early Education for All Children

Megan Slack
By  Megan Slack   February 14, 2013

“In states that make it a priority to educate our youngest children…studies show students grow up more likely to read and do math at grade level, graduate high school, hold a job, form more stable families of their own.  We know this works.  So let’s do what works and make sure none of our children start the race of life already behind.”

President Barack Obama,  State of the Union, February 12, 2013

The beginning years of a child’s life are critical for building the early foundation needed for success later in school and in life.  Leading economists agree that high-quality early learning programs can help level the playing field for children from lower-income families on vocabulary, social and emotional development, while helping students to stay on track and stay engaged in the early elementary grades.  Children who attend these programs are more likely to do well in school, find good jobs, and succeed in their careers than those who don’t.

Despite the benefits of early education, our nation has lagged in making sure high-quality programs are available for our youngest kids. While 39 states and the District of Columbia offer state funded pre-school, the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development estimates that the United States ranks 28th out of 38 countries for the share of four-year olds enrolled in early childhood education. And just 3 in 10 four-year-olds are enrolled in high-quality programs that prepare kids with the skills they need for kindergarten.

In particular, studies show that children from low-income families are less likely to have access to high-quality early education, and less likely to enter school prepared for success.  By third grade, children from low-income families who are not reading at grade level are six times less likely to graduate from high school than students who are proficient.  And the high costs of private preschool and lack of public programs also narrow options for middle-class families.

That’s why, in his State of the Union address, President Obama called on Congress to expand access to high-quality pre-school to every child in America.

The President is proposing a new federal-state partnership to provide all low- and moderate-income four-year old children with high-quality preschool. His proposal will also expand access to high-quality preschool for children from middle class families and incentivizing full-day kindergarten policies.

Under his proposal, the U.S. Department of Education would allocate dollars to states based their share of four-year olds from low- and moderate-income families (those at or below 200% of the poverty line) and funds would be distributed to local school districts and other partner providers to implement the program. In order to access federal funding, however states would be required to meet quality benchmarks that are linked to better outcomes for children, include:

  • State-level standards for early learning
  • Qualified teachers for all preschool classrooms
  • A plan to implement comprehensive data and assessment systems.

Funds under this program may also be used to expand full-day kindergarten once states have provided preschool education to their low- and moderate-income students.

The President’s proposal will also help expand the availability of Early Head Start, which provides early learning opportunities before kids begin preschool, as well as voluntary home visiting programs. Home visiting programs enable nurses, social workers, and other professionals to connect families to services and educational support that will improve a child’s health, development, and ability to learn.

Reducing Pollution For All American Families

Administrator Lisa P. Jackson
By  Administrator Lisa P. Jackson  February 14, 2013 The White House Blog

When I first became Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, I made a list of my priorities for the Agency.Working for environmental justice was at the top of that list. Ensuring equal environmental protections for all Americans is the unfinished business of the environmental movement.

It’s a simple idea – that all Americans are entitled to clean air to breathe, safe water to drink and a healthy community to raise their families – but often, it is America’s low-income and minority communities that bear the brunt of our country’s pollution.

As a result, these communities are also hit harder by the many illnesses pollution is linked to – conditions like asthma, heart disease, cancer and strokes. Studies show that minority groups face a greater risk of having asthma, and once they have it, they are at a greater risk of needing emergency treatment. African-American children are hospitalized for asthma at twice the rate of white children, and asthma-related deaths among African-American children take place at a rate of four times that of non-Hispanic white children. Hispanic children — especially of Puerto Rican descent — also face higher rates of asthma.

Dirty air, polluted water and contaminated lands not only put families at higher risks of serious and potentially costly diseases – they also discourage new developments and new jobs. Poison in the ground often means poison in the economy. Limiting the economic possibilities of low-income and minority communities only makes it harder to break the cycle of poverty.

Shortly after I was sworn in, I asked EPA employees to make environmental justice part of every decision we make. I called on the whole Agency to think creatively and work hard to make certain that our efforts reach all communities. Plan EJ 2014 – the environmental justice strategy we unveiled more than two years ago– is the tool we created for answering that call. It is aimed at ensuring that environmental justice is integrated into all of EPA’s day-to-day responsibilities – everything from permitting, compliance and enforcement, to community-based programs and the work we do with other federal agencies.

As I prepare to leave EPA, one of my last acts as administrator is issuing the Plan EJ 2014 Progress Report. The report provides ample evidence of how far we have come in making environmental justice an integral and permanent part of EPA’s day-to-day business. It also details how we have mobilized the entire federal government to incorporate environmental justice into the work each agency conducts.

For the first time in our 42 year history, we have laid the groundwork for EPA to fully implement its environmental justice mission of ensuring environmental protection for all Americans, regardless of race, ethnicity or income level. I am proud of the work we have started and the progress we have made, and I am confident that it will continue long after I depart.

From Pat in response to Thoughts On The Hannity/Zimmerman Interview

Pat responds:

I totally agree with your article. One thing, had Zimmerman been a black man and shot a white teenager, he would have been taken away in a body bag, not walk away, Once the cops realized that a white kid had been shot, they would have shot Zimmerman 42 times and asked questions later. Zimmerman is a sleezebag and an opportunist. I wonder how the racist whites feel now that it has been revealed that he used their monies to pay personal bills. My heart and prayers are with Treyvon’s family everyday and I ask the Lord to give them strength.

From Michelle in response to The Angry Man Speaks

Michelle says:

I was listening to progressive talk radio on the way home, Randi Rhodes show, and she played a few portions of Zimmerman’s interview with Hannity. At one point, Zimmerman was asked that in looking back now, if he would have done anything differently. Zimmerman replied he would not because he believes it was “God’s will” and left it at that.

First of all, that’s a cop-out. But secondly…. is not one of God’s Ten Commandments, “Thou shalt not kill”? I may be an atheist, but this seems awful contradictory to me, and also as though Zimmerman places himself above his God….

In a nutshell, though, I had hoped that Zimmerman had some sort of regret or remorse. From the sound of the portions I listened to, he does not. And he deserves everything he gets when he eventually goes to prison. And I hope they put him in Gen Pop… he’ll never be able to sit down again.

From angrymanspeaks on the post Thoughts On The Hannity/Zimmerman Interview

angrymanspeaks says:

Great Post. as usual your words cut to the quick. I am going to repost this for my readers with your permission of course. I will also publish my comment below as an article. i do this often as time writing a well thought out comment should not be wasted. The first thoughts are often the best and trying to completely rewrite is similar to reinventing the wheel. it’s never quite as good as the first one.

So now to the matter at hand:

“How would it effect all of killer George Zimmerman’s many racist supporters if their son or daughter, niece or nephew, grandfather or grandmother, mom or dad, cousin or aunt and uncle, even a friend, were gunned down by someone, in cold blood,
***** then that murderer went on national TV to talk about it as if it were a ballgame they had attended?”*****

This is the best analogy I have heard in connection with this farce.

I watched the interview on Youtube and I was struck by how similar George Zimmermans demeanor and attitude about this killing were; to that of some Nazi war criminals I have seen interviewed about their crimes.

No shame; no remorse; no humanity.

He smiled; he laughed.

I was almost in tears. Ok so I had to wipe away one or two. (and if you’ve seen my picture you will know that ain’t a pretty sight)

When this story first broke; I wrote an article that was; at the time; a bit premature I must admit.
But I was so angry at the actions of this killer that i took what I knew and made my best analysis of the crime.
I said that George Zimmerman was a cold blooded killer. That he was waiting for the opportunity to kill someone and Trayvon just happened to be the right race in the wrong place.
I also said that If George got off on this murder; he was sure to kill again.

Since then I have had some small reason to think I judged too quickly. Perhaps and this was just a case of a racist wannabe.

After watching the interview today; I am now convinced that my initial assesment was correct afterall. George Zimmerman is a cold blooded psychopath.

He is no doubt racist but then all serial killers have a certain type of victim they prefer.

Just because he is racist does not preclude his being a serial killer or one in the making at least.

I don’t know if George Zimmerman has killed before and although I believe he will; I don’t know that he will kill again.

What I do know though is that he has surely killed this time.

He killed Trayvon Martin.
He killed his dreams.
He killed the hearts of Tayvon’s parents; friends; and family.
He killed the hearts of millions of Americans who believe in equality; brotherhood and freedom for all Americans; for all people everywhere.
And perhaps worse than all that in a way; George Zimmerman has hurt us.
He has hurt us deeply; with a hurt that isn’t likely to pass as long as I live.
I will always see the face of Trayvon as he was alive in his photos and I will always see the face of George Zimmerman as he smiled and told his story in that interview today.
I just wanted to vomit.
I want to now.
God may forgive George Zimmerman for the horrible acts he has comitted; but I know I never will.

It seems Morgan Freeman is destined to lend his talents and support to one Dark Knight or another.
This time he chose the right one for sure. He chose our Dark Knight.
I really like that.
Everybody’s waiting for the Great White Hope; but we gave up on him a long time ago.
We chose a Dark Knight for our hero and man did we do good or what?

Our Dark Knight……that is brilliant.

There just may be hope for America yet, with Real Americans like these.

Mr Larry Pratt writes:

Romney Seems to think The Grass is Greener on the other side……So Who’s the American?

1.  His money is spread out in other countries – as if our country is not good enough or not smart enough. He’d rather they profit than America.

2.  He’d rather send jobs to other countries for profits rather than see our fellow American’s support their families.

3.  He wants to stop Obamacare and leave millions without medical care because it helps his 1% and Healthcare he can pay for his self

4.  He wants to eliminate Public Schooling  or increase the size of classrooms, like everyone can afford charter Schools.

5.  Tax Returns are his but if you’re running for the Office of President  it seems as thought you would be transparent in how you beat the system, to help others with the loop holes in the tax system… And how much did you really beat us out of.

I would go on and on but if you think the grass is greener on the other side?… I mean how much more do you think we should be forgiving of?
You think we should allow you to be the next Baby’s Daddy (POTUS) so you can leave us (USA) high and dry without any Child Support!   So Who’s the American?

This is in response to a post of this blog entitled: Welfare Recipients….Which Race Gets More Benefits?

The response is from a person named Seeking Knowledge

Thank you for this article. I’m embarrassed that as a 33 year old black professional female, I really did not know this. I never thought about how many non-black Americans utilize govt. assistance until one of my friends broke it down to me. Well now I need some facts. Can you direct me to some solid resources so that I can expand my own knowledge?
I attended a republican congressional debate recently (just to hear both sides–I am somewhere in between a democrat & independent). And I was apalled. Even though I am not well versed in politics, I walked right up to one of the candidates after the forum challenged some of the nonsense that came out of his mouth. He was shocked. I was angry for the rest of the evening! Please give me suggestions on how to better educate myself.

A Response to Mitt Romney‘s history:

From cadesertvoice

Take a company, run it into bankruptcy, take away pensions of workers, fire workers, sell off company assets (to your buddies), sell off the company and gain a profit, hire overseas workers at low wages and no benefits and…wa-laaaa…this is how Romney “earns” his millions.

He then takes those millions and spreads them around the world in bank accounts so he doesn’t have to pay US taxes.

What would you call a guy like this? I’d call him the most evil type of criminal who has learned to use the laws for his greed and corruption at the expense of human lives and the country.

And he wants to be President.

In response to this post: All Of Mitt Romneys Lies….From Day ONE. ALL Of Them.

J. Andrew Smith writes:

I’d love your reaction to this: I think one major difference between liberals and conservatives is that liberals say what’s true, but conservatives says what feels good to say. And a major problem with the American electorate is that the majority of them can’t or won’t do a little fact-checking, a problem made worse by such media outlets as those Rupert Murdoch owns (e.g., Fox Noise / Faux News) or the Drudge Report, founded by a guy who admits he does no research.

If there’s any complaint I have about Obama, it’s that he doesn’t speak enough — that’s his gift! — about what he’s done and continues to do, and he acknowledged that a bit last week. He doesn’t fully understand an old saying, “The campaign never stops”, so the Republicans have had more than their share of opportunity over these three-plus years to get onto the media and lie, lie, and lie some more. That’s what they have to do, because the truth would make them look bad — even though despite that they’ve admitted to their basic strategy: say no to Obama and everything he says and does.

For example, Obama should come out on the offensive against the Tea Party by proving pretty much everything they say or do stupid, wrong or bad, which is the case. FYI I like to call them the party of Stupidi-Tea, Insani-Tea, Infantili-Tea, Duplici-Tea and Voraci-Tea. After all, their acronym means Taxed Enough Already — but they support lowering taxes on the rich?? What hypocrisy!

Anyway, thanks very, VERY much for posting this list. PLEASE keep it updated — I know how busy that must make you! And believe me, only candidates with D’s next to their name get my vote…

In response to this post: Illinois City Begs Mitt Romney To Stop Bain From Outsourcing 170 Local Jobs To China

From Karen Myers:

“I think it is a distraction from the Obama campaign to distract from the huge issues, like the economy and jobs,” Jan Brewer told The Huffington Post.

If Romney were Hispanic, Brewer would demand to see his papers… ALL of them!

It IS about the economy and jobs, and how the “Job Creator” (in this economy) sent American jobs out of the country… Do you get it now, Jan!?! Well there you have it. Millions of jobs shipped overseas for the profit of a few, and now she’s upset because Mitt has been caught and gets a few tough questions…It’s a distraction. Gee Jan, I’m sorry our future prosperity that was gambled away and flushed has upset you against us, and thank you for standing up for us.

Distraction she says…Well isn’t that the pot calling the kettle black. Hey Jan, one word, “Birtherism”… Wanting to refuse to allow the current POTUS on the ticket in Arizona because his long form birth certificate from Hawaii doesn’t meet Brewer’s standards is so much more important than knowing whether a candidate was in charge of a company that outsourced tens of thousands of jobs and destroyed American companies. Right!?! Oh, the irony of it all…thinking this is a distraction but the Birther stuff isn’t! If it smells fishy, it may be a fish. Let’s show Romney some real respect. Does that entail shaking your finger in his face too?

So, let me get this straight. Asking for facts or proof is a distraction. Pretending the President is from another country and continually demanding that he present a birth certificate, despite him having done so, based on racism and an effort to try to delegitimize him is what, prudent and time worthy!?! It must be fun in their heads.
They have blatantly disrespected the President for four years now, and now they want him to call off his dogs. It’s called Karma! These very same people have fanned the flames about President Obama’s place of birth since he took office and to this day are still demanding to see his birth certificate. I guess openness only applies to President Obama.

Romney: “I will not show you my tax returns.”

Voters: “We will not show you the inside of the White House.”

From a personal perspective, Romney should stand accountable for perhaps his huge misdeeds like anyone else. The distraction is that he is not releasing the returns. Romney can end that distraction but in doing so he would pretty much eliminate his chances of ever becoming president. Those returns will be a treasure trove of what is wrong with the tax system. His tax returns will prove to America why we can no longer give these enormous tax breaks to the rich…because they’re NOT “Job Creators” and they’ve been getting away with this lie for over ten years now! What if there is a year or two where he made tens of millions and paid little or no taxes!?!

What the heck has the GOP been doing for over two years now anyway? They’ve been distracted from creating JOBS and helping the ECONOMY, yet they’ve found the time for 32 attempts to repeal health care (not to mention the $50 million they’ve spent in these attempts); numerous attempts to stall or block the raising of the debt ceiling; hundreds of attempts at blocking women’s health care…with ridiculous bills on Abortions, Contraception and Trans-vaginal Ultrasounds in their “War on Women”; and non-relenting attempts to install Voter ID laws to insure that LESS people will vote so the GOP can ensure they stay in power to name just a few!!!

Republicans have not done one thing, NOT A DAMN THING, to help return the millions and millions of jobs the Bush policies cost the American people…Even though they ran on Jobs, Jobs, Jobs!!! When President Obama took office in January, ’09, we were losing 800,000 jobs a month! They promised their constituents prior to the 2010 midterm elections, that they were setting their sights on JOBS yet they’ve done NOTHING to even create a single bill or job…because that would HELP President Obama and help this country which they want NO PART OF!!!

Romney’s record as Governor of Massachusetts shows he was 47th in job growth out of 50 states. How is that for a good recommendation to get the economy back on track? He has NOTHING OF SUBSTANCE to run on! He can’t run on his record as Governor of Massachusetts because of his poor performance and Bain Capital is all he has left to run on. It’s obvious that he is hiding something rather secretive that he does not want us to discover; otherwise, he’d be releasing his tax returns tout suite to take all the pressure off of him.

He and his handlers have decided that whatever it is he is hiding, far outweighs what he would have to try and talk his way out of… They’ll probably reveal that he’s been controlling Bain a lot longer than he’s willing to admit to. He’s gamed the tax system and refuses to even consider being responsible for his decisions. So therefore, he’s willing to continue to ride out the storm regardless of repeated requests from both sides to present his tax returns! He will give the rich more tax breaks (as if they need it) and end social welfare programs to pay for it. The GOP’s “trickle down” economics plan failed since Reagan and it will again.

A distraction!?! A man who is running for President of the United States of America avoids paying taxes and that is a distraction!?! Wow!!! Integrity matters. Period! Mitt has total control over this “distraction”. All he has to do is release his tax records, all of them…And explain why he has so many offshore accounts.

When you lose control of the narrative your only defense is to call your opponent’s narrative distracting, and hope it sticks. And hope that no one noticed you never addressed the question.

This is not a distraction. If the shoe were on the other foot, Romney’s team would be running this into the ground and be just as relentless in their pursuit to dig up as much dirt on Obama as they could. Look at how he talked so much about Obama’s citizenship and birth certificate when it came to the forefront. He wouldn’t let up. Now the tables have turned and the attack is on him and he can’t handle it. As the saying goes “Don’t dish it out if you can’t take it”!

Romney and his handlers brought this upon themselves. Right now, fortunately, President Obama has the momentum. However, I will be interested in next week’s polls and thereafter, to see what effect it really has on voters.

Response to this post: Welfare Recipients….Which Race Gets More Benefits?

From Mr. Timothy Walters:

I found your blog doing research after one of my students wrote a essay on black stereotypes. I needed to verify her references. I was reading over this page and just read a few comments. Im an African Amercan man, I have a masters in mathematics, and have been a high school teacher in Maryland for 23 years last week. The comments people are leaving on this blog are completely racist! Not from just the readers! The student that used this page was thirteen. Our country’s young people are the foundation were laying to some day run this country. Just because I’m black doesn’t mean I cant take criticism. And just because a different race disagrees with what I may believe doesn’t make them racist. Stay strong and keep writing about what you believe!!

Thats all for now, but I will post more of Real Americans Speak each time I receive comments from you readers.
