There are zero days left to get health insurance coverage for 2014 at HealthCare.gov. Open enrollment ends TODAY March 31. If you haven’t signed up yet, the President wants you to get covered today.

As the President says, “No one’s invincible. We all get sick, or get into accidents. Life happens. But you should never have to worry you’ll lose everything to medical bills. That’s why health insurance is so important.”

And if you already have health insurance, tell your friends, family, and co-workers that they need to get covered, too. VisitWH.gov/GetCovered for tips on how to spread the word.

President Obama hits Chicago Wednesday for DNC fundraisers

President Barack Obama hits Chicago on Wednesday for two jumbo priced fundraisers to benefit the Democratic National Committee.

Obama hosts a roundtable—I am told keyed towards business executives—at the Chicago Cut Steakhouse downtown where about 25 folks are expected; the tab is up to $32,400. The Obama roundtable is hosted by Mesirow Financial Chairman and CEO Richard Price.

Later, Obama is the headliner at a dinner for about 55—donating up to $10,000–at the Lincoln Park  home of Craig Freedman and Grace Tsao-Wu, who is an Obama major donor and fund-raiser.

“It will be a great opportunity to get a photo with the President and hear him speak in an intimate setting,” a note with the invite for the Lincoln Park event said.

President Obama, Pope Francis gift exchange: Details on the presents

Global leaders routinely exchange gifts and on Thursday, President Barack Obama in the Vatican gave Pope Francis a custom seed chest constructed with reclaimed wood from a historic Baltimore cathedral. If the pope comes to Washington — and he might — President Obama wants him to see First Lady Michelle’s White House garden. The pope gave President Obama a book, Evangelii Gaudium, or “The Joy of the Gospel.”

“The president was up first for the exchange,” according to the pool report. “He gave the Pope a custom-made box of seeds. The President mentioned that he heard the pope has decided to open gardens at the summer residence to the public.

“These I think are carrots,” he said, holding a pouch. “Each one has a different seed in it. The box is made from timber from the first cathedral to open in the United States in Baltimore.”

“If you have a chance to come to the White House, we can show you our garden as well,” the President said.

President Obama also received an encyclical.

“I actually will probably read this in the Oval Office when I’m deeply frustrated. I’m sure it will give me strength and calm me down,” the president said smiling.

When the president told the pope that he could visit the White House garden, the pope responded in Spanish: “Como no,” which translates to “why not?” Or “for sure.”

Federal employees—and President Obama is one of them– are banned, by law, of keeping anything worth more than $350, so most items end up in government archives storage. Some items—such as art, vases and rugs—can be put on display.

Thanks to the pool reporters on the scene, Michael D. Shear of The New York Times and Carrie Budoff Brown of Politico for the details in their reports:

PRESIDENT OBAMA’S GIFT TO POPE FRANCIS

President Barack Obama presented His Holiness Pope Francis with a custom-made seed chest featuring a variety of fruit and vegetable seeds used in the White House Garden.  Earlier this month, Pope Francis made the historic announcement that he would open to the public the gardens of the papal summer residence, the Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo.

The chest is made from American leather, and features reclaimed wood from the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is one of the oldest Catholic cathedrals built in the United States.

The Basilica’s cornerstone was laid by John Carroll, a Jesuit and the first Catholic bishop and archbishop in the United States.  The Cathedral was designed by Benjamin Latrobe, who was selected by President Thomas Jefferson to serve as an Architect of the Capitol, and played a pivotal role in its design and construction.

The inscription on the chest reads:

Presented to His Holiness Pope Francis

by Barack Obama

President of the United States of America

March 27, 2014

In keeping with the spirit of the gift, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello will donate seeds that will yield several tons of produce to a charity of Pope Francis’ choosing.

POPE FRANCIS GIFT TO PRESIDENT OBAMA

“The pope presented the President with two medallions, including one that symbolized the need for solidarity and peace between the northern and southern hemispheres.

…The other gift was a copy of Evangelii Gaudium, or “The Joy of the Gospel.” This was the book that prompted President Obama to say he would read it in the Oval Office when he needs a lift. It is a 2013 apostolic exhortation by Francis that called a new era evangelization and for a renewed focus on the world’s poor.

Get Your Popcorn Ready! It’s the First Ever White House Film Festival

The First Ever White House Student Film Festival

Earlier this month, President Obama made his first movie on a trip to Buck Lodge Middle School in Adelphi Maryland. And on Friday, although we’re not showing the President’s movie,  we might be showing yours.

On Friday, February 28, the White House is hosting the first-ever Student Film Festival, featuring the work of more than a dozen young filmmakers who created short films celebrating the role of technology in the classroom.

The Filmmaker-in-Chief was at Buck Lodge to celebrate progress on ConnectED, an ambitious project to connect 99% of American students to next-generation broadband and wireless technology within five years. In Adelphi, he announced that some of America’s largest companies answered the President’s call to action towards that goal by pledging more than $750 million in commitments to deliver cutting-edge technologies to classrooms, including devices, free software, teacher professional development, and home wireless connectivity.

Building on the President’s eagerness to connect students to technology, and his newfound interest in filmmaking, we’re excited to host the first-ever White House Student Film Festival. In November, we called for K-12 students around the country to create short films on the role of technology in their classroom, and students responded with nearly 3,000 entries. In collaboration with the American Film Institute, the White House will screen the finalists’ works this Friday along with a star-studded cast including Kal Penn, Bill Nye, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Conan O’Brien.

In addition to the celebration of the student films and the President’s remarks, FOX and National Geographic Channel will treat the attendees to a sneak peek of the first episode of the upcoming television series, “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey,”  which celebrates the importance of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

We hope you share the President’s excitement for film-making, and his desire to give all American students the tools they need to stay on the cutting edge.

Manufacturing Innovation Institutes: Putting America at the Forefront of 21st Century Manufacturing

(Official White House Photo by Lawrence Jackson)

Today President Obama announced two new public-private manufacturing innovation institutes – one in Chicago and one in the Detroit area — as well as a competition for the first of four additional institutes that will will boost advanced manufacturing in the United States and attract the types of high-quality jobs that a growing middle class requires.

“For generations of Americans, manufacturing was the ticket to a good, middle-class life. The stuff we made – like steel and cars and planes – is what made America what it is,” President Obama said. “But advances in technology allowed manufacturers to do more with less, and global competition meant a lot of good manufacturing jobs went overseas.”

Today, our manufacturing industry is adding jobs — more than 620,000 over the last four years. “But the economy has changed,” President Obama said. “And if we want to attract more good manufacturing jobs to America, we’ve got to make sure we’re on the cutting edge of new manufacturing techniques and technologies.”

That’s what these new hubs are all about. They’re partnerships – they bring together companies and universities to develop cutting-edge technology, train workers to use that technology, and make sure research is turned into real-world products made by American workers.

Each institute serves as a regional hub, bridging the gap between applied research and product development by bringing together companies, universities and other academic and training institutions, and federal agencies to co-invest in key technology areas that encourage investment and production in the United States.

This type of “teaching factory” provides a unique opportunity for education and training of students and workers at all levels, while providing the shared assets to help companies, most importantly small manufacturers, access the capabilities and equipment to design, test, and pilot new products and manufacturing processes.

In a statement Obama said, “Michelle and I were saddened to hear of the passing of Harold Ramis, one of America’s greatest satirists, and like so many other comedic geniuses, a proud product of Chicago’s Second City. When we watched his movies – from “Animal House” and “Caddyshack” to “Ghostbusters” and “Groundhog Day” – we didn’t just laugh until it hurt. We questioned authority. We identified with the outsider. We rooted for the underdog. And through it all, we never lost our faith in happy endings. Our thoughts and prayers are with Harold’s wife, Erica, his children and grandchildren, and all those who loved him, who quote his work with abandon, and who hope that he received total consciousness.”
