How Many People Have Been Killed by Guns Since Newtown?

Using the most recent CDC estimates for yearly deaths by guns in the United States, it is likely that as of today, 8/28/2013, roughly 22,581 people have died from guns in the United States, in the 256 days since The Sandy Hook Elementary Massacre.. Compare that number to the number of deaths reported in the news in our interactive below, and you can see how undertold the story of gun violence in America actually is.

Number of deaths reported in the news, excluding suicides: 7,616. Seven Thousand Six Hundred & Six dead in the 256 days since The Sandy Hook Elementary Massacre.

I reblogged this once before and can’t reblog it a second time, but this is vitally important information in bringing about change in the racist state of Florida…..BOYCOTT!

From The Web Site Powell Out Loud, thank you Ms. Theresa “Tess” Powell, Of Powell Out Loud:

An economic boycott of Florida based companies will force corporations to use their power and influence to change the laws that set child murder George Zimmerman free and put an end to their corrupt legal system.

While protests & vigils are appropriate, they haven’t done much to stop the tide of racially profiled murder victims. We’ve held them following Sean Bell, Oscar Grant, Rodney King with little effect.

Here’s a list of Florida based companies you can boycott from any state, that will have a strong economic impact & bring about meaningful change:(It’s so a good idea to tweet them too)

1) Do not buy products or services produced in Florida. Oranges, Tropicana orange juice, Elizabeth Arden Cosmetics, Hertz Rental cars, Perry Ellis International,Tupperware, Sunbeam appliances, Trac Phone Wireless, Cash4Gold, EA Tiburon which owns EA Electronics Video Games

2) Don’t patronize restaurants based in Florida. Darden corporation owns Red Lobster, Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, Bahama Breeze, Seasons 52, The Capital Grille, Eddie V’s and Yard House, Bloom Brand own Outback Steakhouse, also these franchises Pizza Fusion, Ruth’s Chris Steak House

3) Don’t shop at any stores based out of Florida. Office Depot, Stein Mart Clothing, Bijoux Terner Fashions, Peace Love World Apparel ,Badcock Home Furniture, Champs Sports, Tire Kingdom

4) Don’t stay at hotels with owner companies based in Florida. Chatham Lodging Trust owns many Residence Inns, Hyatt Hotels, Hampton Inns.

5) Don’t use any Florida based web services such as, Friend finder Networks owns,

6) Don’t buy from HSN, the Home Shopping Network.

7) Don’t shop at any Florida based grocery stores WinnDixie, Publix Super Markets

8) Don’t buy from Florida based online companies – Tiger Direct Computer Supplies,

9)Please plan your vacation & conventions in other states, Skip Disney, Epcot Center, Orlando Studios

10) If anyone knows of companies that should be added please leave them in the comments

Don’t forget, there are alternatives to all these products, so even if you live in Florida you can still boycott these companies by buying products & services produced by out of state companies. You don’t have to leave the state to boycott.

Please don’t be taken by the fear mongering headlines that boycotting will effect the people hurting most in Florida. It’s going after large corporations, not small business owners. If this is done nationwide, the losses these companies will suffer should cause them to take action long before huge layoffs take place.  Peace and Blessings.

Thank you Theresa “Tess” Powell, Of Powell Out Loud.

Starting on October 1, America will take a huge step towards universal health care. That’s the day that 22 million uninsured Americans will be able to start getting affordable health insurance under Obamacare.

But now, with just weeks to go, right-wing groups have launched a multi-million-dollar campaign to torpedo Obamacare before it even gets started.

Their plan: Mislead young people about how the law works so they get scared and don’t enroll. The problem is that it really could work because if younger, healthier people don’t participate, then costs will skyrocket and Obamacare will fail. Period.

It’s disgusting—people could actually die because they don’t get the health insurance they need, and our entire health care system would be thrown into chaos. But these groups are so blinded by hate for Barack Obama that they’ll do anything to make his signature program go up in smoke.

To fight back, MoveOn is launching an urgent campaign of our own to debunk right-wing lies and go after Republican politicians and media outlets that spread misinformation.

Get the facts & truthful information On The Affordable health Care Act (ObamaCares)

Conservatives are so desperate to stop Obamacare from succeeding that they’re literally telling people to “burn your Obamacare card”—even though these cards don’t even exist.

Our plan is to counter their misinformation campaign with a laser-like focus on social media and the websites where young people spend the most time. Young people live on the Internet today, and reaching them online is far cheaper than with traditional TV advertising.

Just for starters, we’ll be able to put an ad on the Facebook pages of 18- to 35-year-olds across America, and we’ll also run ads in college newspapers—right as students return to school—explaining the truth about what Obamacare means for young people.

We’ve seen these kinds of right-wing scare tactics work before—lies about Social Security have convinced an entire generation of young people that that program won’t be around in the future. And polling shows that awareness about the new program is dangerously low among the young people who need health insurance most.

We know from the past that MoveOn can run effective campaigns to debunk lies and misinformation. During the last election, we lampooned Mitt Romney’s lies with truth and humor, and it worked.

We’ve reached a critical moment. Summer’s ending. School’s starting. And with just weeks to go, young people are starting to tune in.

MoveOn members were integral in passing the Affordable Care Act. We’ve come too far and fought too hard to let right-wing extremists succeed at making sure health care reform fails.

Stop the right-wing effort to kill Obamacare before it gets started.

Let Freedom Ring |The 50th Anniversary March on Washington

Reuters - An address by PresidentBarack Obama and nationwide bell-ringing will cap celebrations on Wednesday marking the 50th anniversary of civil rights leader Martin Luther King’s landmark “I have a dream” speech.

Obama will speak during the “Let Freedom Ring and Call to Action” commemoration on the steps of Washington’s Lincoln Memorial, the site of King’s address on August 28, 1963, the White House said.

Other speakers include former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. The ceremony will follow an interfaith service at Shiloh Baptist Church in Washington, organizers said.

The speech by Obama, the first black U.S. president, will come as almost half of Americans say much more needs to be done before the color-blind society that King envisioned is realized.

I Have a Dream Speech
Martin Luther King’s Address at March on Washington
August 28, 1963. Washington, D.C.

When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, “Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”

To honor this occasion, President Obama will be joined Wednesday, August 28th, by President Jimmy Carter and President Bill Clinton, members of the King family and other civil rights leaders and luminaries at the Let Freedom Ring Commemoration and Call to Action event at the Lincoln Memorial, to commemorate Dr. King’s soaring speech and the 1963 March on Washington.

As we mark this important anniversary, we reflect on what the Civil Rights Movement has meant for the country, and perhaps most importantly, the hard work that lies ahead as we continue to pursue the ideals laid out by Dr. King, and sought by the hundreds of thousands of Americans who marched through our nation’s capital fifty years ago.

This event is open to the public. Doors open at 9:00 AM, for an 11:00 AM program start on Wednesday, August 28th at the Lincoln Memorial. Guests arriving after 12:00 PM are not guaranteed admittance.  In order to access the venue, you must enter from the east side of the Reflecting Pool, on 17th street, near the World War II Memorial.
