The Puerto Rican anthem had just been played for the first time at an Olympic medal ceremony. Monica Puig was wiping away her tears when the two women she had defeated in her final surge to her most surprising gold medal stepped up to the top step of the podium to join her for pictures.

Both were Grand Slam champions. Petra Kvitova, whom Puig upset in three sets in the semifinals, has won two Wimbledons. Angelique Kerber, whom Puig upset, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, in Saturday’s final, won the Australian Open this year and pushed Serena Williams hard in the Wimbledon final last month.
