Olympic gold medalist Monica Puig returned home this weekend to a huge welcome, following her historic win in the women’s singe competition.
Puig’s victory made her the first-ever Puerto Rican to win a gold medal for the island.
“[I am] enjoying my time at home so much,” she wrote on social media Sunday. “Really happy to be here with my family and cannot wait to see everyone at the official festivities here in San Juan on Tuesday.”
Indeed, Puig will be the subject of a major public ceremony at the Puerto Rico Coliseum tomorrow, to be attended by some of Puerto Rico’s former Olympic medalists, winners of silver or bronze medals.
“Your victory is for your people a halo of light in the depths of the night,” Puerto Rico Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla told Puig when she greeted her at the airport.
