Eat Dessert FIRST

Work hard now, put away for tomorrow

rainy day parables

a penny saved, is a penny earned

prophets and sorrow, strive never borrow

fortunes good grace, lest she turn rapidly to distaste

frugality favors, put away good bone china

preserve not the now, but maybe some day

our children will not have it so hard

she placed self-denial in its cabinet, worked day and night

limiting her desires, economizing worn to the bone

throbbing knuckles red with scrubbing worth

hearing the restraint of her father’s voice

child; plan for tomorrow avoid waste and extravagance today

work hard the now, enjoy later, even when later may never show

she thought of the sapphire and silver party dress

still in tissue paper pressed and perfect like butterfly wing

waiting for her to emerge sticky from cocoon, and become tomorrow

she touched her old feet, growing sore and flat in sensible toil
